Rogue Trader - Space Dark Elf Trooper

$

Hello Friends,
My latest painted miniature is the Space Dark Elf Trooper who was released on the Warhammer 40,00 Rogue Trader March 1987 mail order flyer along with other famous rarities like the Piscean (Saharduin) warrior and the Imperial Bodyguard. A good example of the original miniature can be seen here.

It was an enjoyable miniature to paint and I went with a purple/violet scheme as I done with previous Dark Eldar projects, I think it brings out their malevolence, it is certainly an interesting miniature covered in intricate pipes, tubes and bands which required lots of concentration to paint neatly. His weapon resembles a Flamer but could also be some sort of Shuriken Catapult if that's what you like, his armour is mesh (chainmail) and carapace plates and he is equipped with a power pack for his armour/weapon or some sort of flight pack.

I would probably say the detailing on the sculpt was probably the reason the Space Dark Eldar did not get it's own range, all that tubing must have been tough to cast and must off lead to lots of failed miniatures, I think all examples of miniature I have seen the tubing has small breaks and missing bits in random areas.

Paint Pot Restoration - Citadel Colour & Wargames Foundry Paints

$

Hi Friends, while I am still finishing off a whole bunch of miniatures for this blog and I thought I should share this easy paint pot restoration technique with you.

Now If you been painting Citadel miniatures like I have since the early 1980's you may have amassed quite a number of paints, I myself am probably nearing the 200 mark and although I mainly use Vallejo Model Color nowadays but on occasions I still go back to my Golden Age (pre 1992) Citadel Colour ranges and much has been blogged about these superb paints

I still own all the Citadel Colour paints sets and 95% of the paints are still close to full and in good working order the only problem is the many of the lids are broken and on ones that I have not opened for 20 years the plastic can be a bit brittle and snap forcing me to then prise the lid open with a screwdriver.

All the abuse during painting can lead to the ugly pots of beloved paint and the possibly of air drying your paints up so I went looking for a solution.

Now everybody knows that the original Citadel Colour range is still available now as the Coat D'Arms colour range but I didn't want to replace my original paints I wanted to revive them so I went looking for replacement pots, originally I wanted to transfer all my Citadel Colour into pipette type bottle like Vallejo paints but this was going to a lot of hard work and I am limited to about 4 hours a week painting time at the moment.

Anyway did a bit of Googling for a replacement pot solution and first came across these...

Coat D'Arms Empty Paint Pot Deal for £6.00 for 10

Coat D'Arms Paint Pot Lid for 0.15p each

Now the above solution looked a bit expensive once I had added the £3.50 P&P and when I have about 100 Citadel Colour paints with the white lids and then I came across these on eBay from a craft supplies seller...

Ebay 20 Empty Paint Pots for £7.55 (Buy it now) with Free P&P

I ordered 20 and tested them and they were perfect, in most cases I only have only needed to rip the old battered lid of and firmly push new lid on then I was left with a fully restored citadel colour pot.

Big bag of empty pots arrives at my workstation

Classic Citadel Hawk Turquoise was the first to get a make over as the lid shattered on me the other night and it was in danger of drying out.
Some of my Citadel Colour in retirement
And a few more waiting for a make over
This technique also works great with Wargames Foundry paints which surprisingly all the lids on mine were terribly broken and cracked now these are great paints which I use often so it probably just wear and tear rather than a fault with the product.

Wargames Foundry paints really did need saving and are now restored good as new

thanks for visiting now get painting... and following this blog
cheers

Chainsword Warrior

Hello Friends, I dropped by my local Games Workshop Birmingham UK the other day to take a look at the new Deathwatch Overkill miniatures as I found the Chaos Cultists sculpts in the Warhammer 40K Dark Vengeance were a bit of a let down so once bitten twice shy, I am happy to say that although not perfect they are much better, I then asked the duty manager of the shop to indulge me and  take a photo of yours truly holding the gigantic Chainsword displayed in the shop window, I was surprised that he said he had never handled the Chainsword before as if I worked there I would be swinging it around all the time. You cannot knock the customer service you get at Games Workshop stores and this post is a thumbs up to those people (although they have no clue about the Oldhammer miniatures I talk about when asked what I am working on). It is a great shame the footfall is falling but I blame the product, super overpriced and well out of pocket money range, sadly miniature collecting is no longer where the teenage paperboy can afford to spend his hard earned money.

Please enjoy this photo of me before I go about shredding the heresy littering the walls, I came out with some new brushes at an extortionate cost so it works out about even. :D

PARA3 Bots - Paranoia Robots

++ The Computer is your friend, all hail The Computer! Zzzzt! ++

I recently started some work on my recently Dettol and acetone stripped Paranoia Robots, many of you may remember during Golden Age of Citadel miniatures 1979-92, around 1986 Games Workshop held the licence to produce the Paranoia RPG game and accompanying miniatures, well I am lucky enough to own nearly all of these miniatures stashed well away with my citadel Judge Dredd miniatures.  Apart from the High Programmer the robots were the highlight of the range and it’s fair to say all the miniatures were perfect for the Games Workshop Judge Dredd RPG and could supplement other Sci-Fi games that swamped the oversubscribed market at the time.

Game wise If you were lucky enough to stay alive for more than 15 minutes and make it through the briefing, passed R&D pickup and out into a corridor you were likely to encounter one of the insane marauding robots that populated Alpha Complex attacking any unexpecting troubleshooter coming into sensory range. (my clones would rarely make it passed the briefing and during one campaign the GM had to increase our clones from 5 to 10, I was not grovelling to The Computer enough apparently)

There are 8 robots in the Citadel Paranoia range, these were supplied as two part models with an upper torso and lower section, the latter being the mode of transport, Hover Base, Robot Legs, Tracked Base and a Wheeled Base.  Adding one of the upper torso sections to your lower mode of transport gave you many configurations.

Jackobot
Scrubot
Docbot
Securobot
Funbot Sm-i-ly
Combot RR-7
Docbot 674-9
Mechbot

Here are the first 3 I have completed and there will be more following soon, Jackobot with wheeled base, Scrubot with robot legs and Docbot with robot leg, the are not the greatest of sculpts but they do have a lot of character.

Over the years I have picked up many robot miniatures for games like Paranoia from SFD/Slocombe warbots to Robo Rally board game robots, hoping that one day I would be able to play a robot rebellion game of Rogue Trader.

I am thinking of digging out my metal and plastic citadel Dr Who range Daleks, K9 and Davros for the legendary Rogue Trader vs Paranoia crossover scenario that appeared in White Dwarf 112 entitled "Vulture Warriors from Dimension X Meet Plenty of Cheerful Orks with Plasma Cannon" (VWDXMPCOPC).

Well enough rambling on, please enjoy my painting efforts, the miniatures with the white background are new test shots using my new portable photo studio, any feedback is welcome :)

Citadel Judge Dredd Perps Part 1

Borag Thungg, Earthlet,
The 2000AD comic has always been close it my heart and most nights I wind down in bed reading one of the collected works books from the likes of Titan or Rebellion books, so this week I went through the myriad of undercoated miniatures I have queued up and dug out some citadel Judge Dredd miniatures. I tried to keep to my  previous cartoony style of painting these miniatures trying to emulate the colour and feel of the comic strips although I did take a little more time on the faces.

Firstly we have Link Angel, a member of the Angel Gang described by Mean as "too dumb to know how bad he is".

Link Angel
Link Angel - front
Link Angel - back

Next up we have his brother crazed cyborg Mean ‘Machine’ Angel, another of the Angel Gang and arch enemy of Judge Dredd, for such a simple character with only one real gimmick the head butt, he has entertained us for years in 2000AD stories. This miniature is based Mean’s first outing in the ‘The Judge Child Quest’ where is left arm is blasted off by Judge Dredd in prog 178.

Mean Machine Angel

Drew is a NPC from the Judge Dredd RPG adventure supplementSlaughter Margin’, the miniature is a variant of the Perp Rizlo Butty, variant miniatures were a common feature of the Judge Dredd range and many of the miniatures were used as base models for the Rogue Trader Imperial Army range as well as citadel other ranges.

Drew (Slaughter Margin NPC)

Mek, another character from the ‘Slaughter Margin’ adventure, this miniature eventually made it's way into the Rogue Trader Imperial Army blisters and appeared on the second Rogue Trader flyer as an Imperial Assault trooper accompanied by a Robodog another Slaughter Margin NPC.  This one is a real ugly resculpt and it appears to be based on an old C100 Rogue Trader marine which one is still yet to be identified.

Judge Pike, a variant of the Spit Gun Suzi Perp miniature, She wields a Lawgiver mark 1 which any Dredd fan knows for a Perp that is very unwise so I assume she is a member of the Wally squad, whacky dressed to fit in with the futsies of Mega-city one

If anyone has a PDF copy of the Slaughter Margin adventure I would be very happy to hear from you, I don’t fancy tearing the loft apart looking for it.

Space Marine 30th Anniversary Tribute - LE2 Imperial Space Marine

$

Hello,
I am sure you are all well aware that it's the 30th anniversary of the (Citadel) Space Marine on 16th April and that Games Workshop will be selling their new celebratory updated version of the LE2 Imperial Space Marine on the weekend of 16th/17th April.  The world seemed to have gone beakie mad since the leak of the Imperial Space Marine miniature and many have dusted off their old Space Marine armies and posted photos of them for our enjoyment across the internet, so when I saw the rumour of this event over on a well known rumours website there was only one thing I could do, dive into the box of heavenly delights and pull out LE2 for a painting session in tribute to my old friend.

LE2 Imperial Space Marine

I painted him up in the colours of the Blood Drinkers chapter although in the Rogue Trader rulebook they do not have black shoulder pad but I thought black suited the gold studs better. Readers who don't remember these original Space Marines before the grimdark will notice that he has a sculpted on power plant on his back that was meant to be a flight pack back then, a large laser rifle with scope and blade and weird looking laser pistol both weapons are far from the weapons of Warhammer 40,000 today.  The real detail I love about this miniature is all the vent holes and computer devices attached to his armour and If you don't keep your paint thin there is a danger of filling in all these lovely details so beware.
Here's some photos of my efforts.
LE2 Imperial Space Marine - front

LE2 Imperial Space Marine - front

LE2 Imperial Space Marine - side

LE2 Imperial Space Marine - back

Here's the new Games Workshop version for comparison, you see see they have been quite faithful to the original although the laser rifle and pistol now appear more like a bolter and bolt pistol, I like that the helmet studs are still present, I almost filed them off as flash :D

I will probably buy one but it is a big shame that it's plastic. £18 price tag is extremely steep for a standard miniature, I think you could pick up LE2  Imperial Space Marine on eBay for about £4-5 and I advise you pay no more and just wait for hype to die off.
Games Workshops reimagining of the Imperial Space Marine

And some gorgeous photos of LE2 Imperial Space Marines labelled as Deep Space Mercenaries from the legendary publication Heroes for Wargames (which own 3 copies of :S)

Blade removed from the marine on the right

A head swap on the Marine on the left makes him an excellent officer.  I think the origin of the head is still a mystery.

Last Note, LE10 Power Armoured Marine was really the first Citadel Space Marine for me, it was available in my Games Workshop for ages before we got our hands on a LE2 blister but I don't recall LE10 having a blister or LE code but that's how things were back then just crazy chaos, I may have got it via the mail order trolls which just adds to the confusion as some of my memories are a bit clouded.  (I will take a photo of my LE10 for you another time)

Anyway enough rambling on, I hope you enjoy your Space Marine 30th birthday weekend it's certainly been a trip down memory lane for me,

Q. Now dare I paint the rest of the C100 Space Marines?

A. No! far too many projects on.

Citadel Judge Dredd Perps Part 2

Borag Thungg, Earthlet,
I finally got around to completing the the Angel Gang from citadel Judge Dredd miniatures range and thus finishing my own Judge Child Quest, this story to me has to be in my top ten of all Judge Dredd stories and many others believe that too. I am still putting more time into my faces and moving away from the previous comic book style I used on 2000AD miniatures, please enjoy my latest efforts.

The Angel Gang united once more

Up first we have Elmer 'Pa' Angelpatriarch of the family, this is a man who hasn't softened with old age, he taught his boys how to be darn mean and spends his time planning heinous crimes for his family to commit.

Pa Angel

Next up we have Junior AngelPa's favourite son and the youngest, most evil of the Angel gang, he loves to torture his victims before killing them.

Junior Angel

Lastly we have that horrible evil little s**t the Judge Child, this monstrous freak used his psi powers to manipulate the Angel gang to do his bidding with his end goal being.... Ha! not telling you have to read the Judge Child Quest you will not be disappointed.

The Judge Child

Another shot of the Angel Gang together again.
The Angel Gang

And for all you purists how are shouting where is the Fink, who is also a member of the Angel family although he was not part of the Judge Child storyline, well here he is I painted this one in the early 1990's and now can't decide whether to strip and repaint or just spruce him up a bit.

The Fink

Oldhammer Chaos Beastman and Runequest Broo

$

Hi Folks welcome back,
Lately my legions of Chaos Beastmen and Broo have been feeling a little neglected but while I have been getting back to my Rogue Trader and Judge Dredd projects I still managed to flick a bit of paint on a few Beastmen and enter them into my new Beastmen gallery.

First we have Tiger Man a C27 Chaos Beastman from 1985, a really lovely miniature from this range just before miniatures started appearing with plastic slotta shields, coincidentally I am currently rereading Meltdown Man a 2000AD story from 1980 progs 178 to 227 collected into one volume by Rebellion and the main villains Leeshar's chief henchman is Tiger Commander who I think you will agree is almost a perfect clone of Tiger Man, I wonder if this story and the plethora of animal men had any influence on Trish Morrison's Chaos Beastman sculpts which are very different to the Runequest Broo that Citadel had did before.

Tiger Commander from Meltdown Man
I also think Tiger Man might fit nicely into a Frostgrave Pan Tang Warband like this one I recently enjoyed viewing on Axiom's magpieandoldlead blog, go and have a look it's brilliant.

Tiger Man - front

Tiger Man - back

Tiger Man - side

Next up we have Runequest Chaos Broo Runepriest from way back in 1982, a menacing looking creature, he will certainly be performing blood ritual with my blood priest.  I discovered that this miniature was used as the base miniature for the C27 Chaos Beastman Half-Man, I had never noticed until I started thinking I've painted this miniature before which is quite a common experience for the first few ranges of Citadel Beastmen.

Chaos Broo Runepriest - front
Chaos Broo Runepriest - back

Lastly we have a Broo with Spear or pointed stick in my opinion maybe hardened by fire at the point, a pretty basic and early Broo sculpt lacking in details and quite fragile, although it did require careful restoration due to it's thin legs.

I hope you enjoyed my latest efforts

Inquisitor Augustus - RT7 - Mercenaries

$

Hi, today's Rogue Trader miniature is from the  Inquisitor Augustus from the RT7 Mercenaries range, this miniature sculpted by Bob Naismith, he is a very popular character with the Oldhammer 40K crowd and appeared in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook in a photographed dioramma, artwork (see below) and the occasional appearance in the Heavy Metal section of golden age White Dwarf magazines.  To me he is the archetypal Inquisitor infiltrating intergalactic gun runners for absent Marines and bringing them to the Imperium's justice before the grimdark Inquisitors of the Dan Abnett era i.e. Eisenhorn.

Inquisitor Augustus 1
I aimed to paint him the classic grey colour close to the original that appeared in the White Dwarf advert and many collectors examples out there on the web, their paint jobs don't seem to deviate from the grey colour scheme either.  I am not sure but the Inquisitor Augustus miniature pictured in the advert appears to have some slight variations to the miniature we all have, it looks like it has some sort of vent on the breastplate and possibly a skull on the helmet.  He has all the classic Rogue Trader adventurer trappings, a scanner, binoculars and a communications device, Bolter and what appears to be carapace armour on top of a uniform but that is debatable as the uniform also appears to have the contours of armour in places.  In the Rogue Trader setting this character would have been kitted out with tons of equipment and I think this miniature is one of the few that accurately represents this.

Inquisitor Augustus 2
I painted a 'M' as his badge thus belonging to the Mercenaries he has infiltrated, the 'M' badge appears sculpted on a couple of Judge Dredd Rogue Trooper miniatures and maybe a Rogue Trader era miniature or two and maybe illustrations.

Inquisitor Augustus 3

The M symbol is rooted in a old 2000AD Rogue Trooper story  'Eye of the Traitor' where the main protagonist the Traitor General has put together an army of deserters calling themselves the Marauders and all wearing the 'M' emblem.  Like other 2000ad references that found it way into Rogue Trader so did this before being quickly replaced as the Warhammer 40,000 evolved it's own universe.

Inquisitor Augustus 4

Inquisitor Augustus infiltrating a band of mercenaries his prey destined for the black ships stands just in front of him.

Illustration from the Rogue Trader rulebook

I really wish Citadel had made a set for this miniature with the Imperial Army deserter in chains as depicted in the  Rogue Trader rulebook.

Here are my efforts.

Thanks

Oldhammer 40K - SFD Giant Robots - Imperial & Scout

Hi Folks,
For today's post I have for you two SFD Giant Robots Imperial and Scout sculpted by Bob Naismith and had a limited release in 1987 via a mail order flyer (which was common practice back then) and designed to be used as Warbots, page 42 in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook, I am lucky enough to own all the Robots in this range and love their aesthetics, although they are not so giant as the name suggests. Imagine these on the modern 40k battlefield as Battle-Automata, I can.

Scout and Imperial Giant Robots
Imperial the tallest robot in the range screams manga at me, the samurai style of the robot has a lot of charm and would also make a excellent Nippon construct for the certain Frostgrave warband I am aware of, his right hand looks like it had a plate for weapon to be attached (maybe a Sword?) but this never made it to the final miniature. I should mention that some Citadel collectors know this miniature as 'Tank' as the first flyer wasn't clear on who's who.

I went a bit mental with the colour scheme for this robot, red, white and blue, I must be watching too much of the US presidential candidate race and so I introduce to you Trumpbot© Mark I.

Imperial - front
He has wings does this suggest he can fly or are they a weapon?

Imperial - back

Scout the smallest of the range appears very Battletech, no bright colour schemes he is a scout after all so I painted this one in very earthy tones but not camouflage which would disrupt in those lovely sculpted lines and wouldn't really what to be advertising his whereabouts in red, white and blue.

Scout - front

I hope you like my latest work please come back and enjoy my take on classic miniatures.

Fighting Fantasy 3D Polystyrene Dungeon - Oldhammer artefact found

$

Hi Folks,

We were recently discussing our first ever gaming stores over on the Oldhammer forum, the topic was "Imperium Approved" and I mentioned  I had two Fighting Fantasy 3D Polystyrene Dungeons in the loft and Zhu of Realm of Zhu fame requested a photo and informed me that these were the stuff of mythology.

So I was transporting more baby stuff to the loft for the missus and happened to find one secreted between the roof rafters, I think the other is buried deep, it's a low ceiling loft and junk it stacked rafters to roof tiles, I have to carefully balance on the rafters when looking for stuff, it's a dangerous task but hopefully we are going to clear the whole thing out in a year or two so hopefully the other one will surface.

After a bit of research and talking to the community I found out that the Fighting Fantasy 3D Polystyrene Dungeon is quite sought after which saddened me as I was helping my late friends wife clear out her loft and we found one which I declined as I already had two so we smashed it up and put it in the skip :(

The Dungeon was meant to be part of a Fighting Fantasy Battle Set as written about here You are the Hero - page 64 and here the Fighting Fantasy Wiki, I did own plenty of the large (54mm?) plastic miniatures and the battle ruleset but sadly I don't recall ever playing the rules I was too obsessed with AD&D and Warhammer.

I had asked for two for Christmas 1983/84, most of my gaming friends had one or two and we used to join them all up and stack them on top of each other when playing role playing games.
We used my dungeons for Bloodbowl, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, Rogue Trader and lots of other games, sadly not for Fighting Fantasy Battle game we had long moved on from those plastic figures although the Fighting Fantasy Paint Set was still in use and was the gateway for us moving from enamel to acrylic paints until Citadel Colour come along,  like Citadel Colour the tiny little pots of paint lasted ages, the gold had a dodgy green tinge.

The Dungeons were probably manufactured in 1982 or 1983 and the Fighting Fantasy Collectors Guide by Jamie Fry - page 20 lists the dungeon with a guide price of £200 which was a surprise to me, although it states that this was never sold to the public which is not correct, Games Workshop Birmingham had a pallet of these stacked up in a tower and was selling them off for £10 each which was quite a high price back then, the Fighting Fantasy Wiki mentions these also being seen in the Hammersmith and Sheffield stores and sold thorough out all Games Workshop stores. To my knowledge this was the first ever polystyrene product made for and sold by Games Workshop, later polystyrene products came along like the 1988 Adeptus Titanicus buildings and the 1988 Blood bowl Astrogranite pitch

The Fighting Fantasy 3D Polystyrene Dungeon came in 9 pieces,

1 x base with surrounding outer walls.
6 x small wall sections with arched doors.
2 x  thick sections with rectangular door frames.

3 x small wall sections and 1 thick section made a whole wall insert so where the Dungeon is mentioned to have 3 parts is sort of correct depending on how you look at it.

A wall insert consisting of 3 x small wall sections and 1 thick section

The Dungeon base floor was very well detailed for it's time, most people were still using graph paper or dungeon floor plans for RPG's.

Nice floor detail
More floor detail

It had 12 Doors you could cut out, 6 per wall insert (2 per section), these doors were large compared to a 25mm miniature but were great for Trolls and Ogres to moving around the dungeon.

Rectangular doorway
The doors were only tagged in with a thin seam of polystyrene for easy removal.

The other side of doorway
Arched doorway
A cut out arched doorway
It has arched 2 entrances

An entrance arched doorway
Other details include this ambush spot which may have be a result of the moulding process but it worked for us kids

Hidey-hole

With a bit of imagination you could make many configurations, when you first owned the dungeon the fitting was tight but with the constant reconfiguration it rapidly became loose fitting and I had to glue the sections in with PVA for storage.

My final configuration

You could stack them on top of each other as it had a central stair case and open door way

Stairs leading up

I need to remove some pieces of card covering the opening for the stairs as part of my restoration.

Doorway leading down
Underneath where doorway leads to, useful when stacking the dungeons on top of each other

It had a manufacturers mark 'TRONDEX' who I think still existed until 2007 look here, a Google search yielded "They are manufacturers of expanded polystyrene mouldings for packaging", If only the company were still trading we could of contacted them to discuss digging the mould plans out of their archive.

Here are the manufacturers marks.

TRONDEX 0604 65331
Serial Number 8734 or 18734

You can see it's pretty battered and the gloss black was my effort to toughen and preserve it back in the early 1990's. I started to paint the inside with black matt acrylic paint with plans to dry brush matt grey.

Left unfinished since the early 1990's

For added protection the outer shell was painted in black gloss paint.
The bottom of the base

I aim to clean it and paint the inside matt black base and grey dry brush with wood coloured doors.

After a wipe down last night I managed to repaint half of the inside with matt black acrylic paint.

Here are my efforts so far.

Next post I will add some miniatures to the photos for scale.
I will update you on this nostalgic restoration project asap.  I hope this post will be an asset to those Fighting Fantasy historians out there

Some of you may debate whether this is an Oldhammer artefact or a Fighting Fantasy artefact, my experience is that it was used with everything but Fighting Fantasy, I am guessing the only time this Dungeon was used with Fighting Fantasy battle game and miniatures was when it was play tested by Games Workshop staff but then again like the Bloodbowl polystyrene pitch this may of happened with a wooden dungeon now would that be a glorious sight to see.

thanks for visiting

Hi Folks,
Today's post has my latest work four Rogue Trader Adventurers, Tech-Priest Zon, Hive Worlder, Astropath Korm, Pilot Rav, a Space Slann 'Llamas' and a dog!!.

The end is in sight for my Rogue Trader Adventurers project I have last four miniatures prepped and ready for painting, these are Imperial Scout, Old Bandit, Ships Officer and Space Pirate.

First we have 'Pilot Rav', this guy sports biggles attire,  flying jacket and white scarf.

Pilot Rav - front

Pilot Rav - back

Next up we have 'Hive Worlder', this guy's chainsword reminds me of the crude and brutal weapons of the Dark Heresy art work, I wish the weapons were still like this and not the standard designs of today.

Hive Worlder - front

Hive Worlder - back

Here we have 'Astropath Korm', a nice sculpt, if you look carefully you can see he no longer has the use of his eyes they appear scared and fused shut, he must use his psionic powers to see.

And the last adventurer today  'Tech-Priest Zon', the bald head and technology mounted on his head are reminiscent of Lobot from Star Wars The Empire Strikes back.

Finally I painted an Rogue Trader Space Slann 'Llamas', I really need to get more of these guys and their larger cousins the Space Zoats out of storage and painted. What ever happened to Slann in the Warhammer 40,000 universe? I have read a few articles on this but it's mostly speculation.

An extra treat for all you Oldhammerer's, I have painted the dog the came in the Warrior Maiden's pack from the Citadel Collector Series, it's been on my workbench for about two years, Also found listed as the 'Toy Dog' in the Judge Dredd 'Slaughter Margin' scenario set and 'Barney' in the 'Blood on the Streets' scenario set

RT601 Adventurers Complete - Space Pirate, Imperial Scout, Ships Officer, Old Pirate

$

Hello Friends and Followers, today is a great day as I pleased to announce that my Rogue Trader Adventurers project is complete, all 32 miniatures in the range are now painted to a decent standard and displayed on this blog for collector reference. I originally painted most of these back in the late 1980's and after stripping all that dreadful enamel paint off them I started again, I managed to track down the missing miniatures and that was really good fun, I mean everyone loves an Eldar Trader for a dollar right?  The project took 3 years to complete but having a baby and getting distracted by other Oldhammer miniatures really does throw your painting schedule out.  I will be adding them to my Rogue Trader Gallery asap.

It has been a delightful project to work on the miniatures are so characterful and hark back to a bygone age when the world was a lot simpler and designers still had an imagination, the miniatures were sculpted by Bob Naismith, Trish & Aly Morrison and Mark Copplestone. I was a child of the 2000 AD comic and I bet the sculptors were too as they scream 2000 AD at me and you can see the comics influence in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook and miniature ranges.

I can now move onto to completed my Rogue Trader Mercenary project which you may have already noticed that I have completed Old World Jackand Inquisitor Augustus for.

Anyway enough waffling on lets move onto the miniatures.

Space Pirate, this one should have been called Space Trapper in my opinion, the character is covered in fur pelts and tails, maybe Jokaeroor Gyrinx who knows, although a meltagun may be a bit overkill for a Space fur trapping but then again good for dealing with hostile indigenies, watch The Revenant an you will see what I mean. You can see that he was either the base miniature or influence for the Talisman Timescape Space Pirate miniature, I am not sure which you decide.

Imperial Scout, now I like to imagine him a pseudo muslim Freman from Dune (the film being another major influence on the Warhammer 40,000 universe, you know God Emperor and all thator from The Chronicles Of Riddick, he may even be from the planet Tallarn, he wears an arab type scarf which JB over on Leadplague has talked about and he is armed a Hand Flamer and Shuriken Pistol. I have to mention Axiom's version is really nice too.

Ships Officer, I love this miniature and for a universe set in the 41st Millennium since it’s conception has largely lacked Sci-Fi minatures for space ship crew, space battles, space/void suits for Imperial Guard, this guy could even pass as a Star Wars rebel ships security from the opening scenes of Star Wars IV - A New Hope.  I can't find any other painted example of this miniature so unfortunately I can't share anyone elses goodness.

Ships Officer - front

When I was cleaning up this miniature I noticed some lead oxidation or dodgy moulding/sculpting and one of the eyes had a box type structure, there were no examples available to get a closer look so i carved the eye out and painted it as a bionic eye, it works for me and reminds me of Commander Makara from the superb 1980's TV show Star Fleet.

Ships Officer - dodgy eye

Old Pirate, Punk Bondage trousers, this miniature must have shared the same sculpting dolly as the Ships officer, the pose is the same so is his weapon, armed with an early hand flamer (I read in a citadel catalogue somewhere).  Again I can't find any other painted example of this miniature out on the web so I can't point you to the any of the other superb Oldhammer blogs out there.

Ngaaranh Spawn of Chaos - Compendium One, Now that's Oldhammer 1983

Hi, today a post I have had sitting in my drafts for a while now, 'Ngaaranh Spawn of Chaos' is a classic but hideous Oldhammer miniature, this one got a lick of paint for preservation reasons, the lead was getting darker and darker over the years due to oxidation and I was worried that if I let this continue unchecked the miniature would eventually suffer lead rot and go brittle so I cleaned it up and gave it a quick paint job and a dip in Army Painter Quickshade which has completely sealed the miniature in a heavy gloss varnish, an additional highlight and matt varnish et voila a preserved miniature. (in my opinion anyway :D)

This is an early Citadel miniature limited edition from 1983 way before the not so limited edition 'LE' code range appeared in 1988.

Know as the Compendium One Chaos Specials, Ngaaranh Spawn of Chaos shared the article with infamous Leaping Slomm Two Face and Zygor Snake Arms (the links painted examples are from Roebeast's wonderful blog I suggest you visit).

Another miniature that was sat on my painting table for a year is this Greater Daemon of Slaanesh, I felt this post would make a good home for this miniature, it was a nightmare to assemble and required a lot of filling, I am not overly enamoured with the paint job but it'll do for a battlefield.

Rogue Trader - Fishmen

Hi Folks, I am having a bit of a 2000Ad renaissance at the moment but while painting up my throng of Judge Dredd miniatures I managed to fit in two legendary Fishmen, these miniatures originally appeared on the Rogue Trader RT2 Flyer March 1988 along with the legendary Wolfen, it would be interesting to know if the Wolfen was another repurposed Fiend Factory miniature.

Laserburn/Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader - Fishmen Source

"Sometime in the mid-1980s Bryan Ansell had some Sci-Fi Fishmen made based on Citadel's Fiend Factory FF65 Man-Fish models. See CCM for pictures of the originals. These "Fishmen from Space" were used to playtest Laserburn and then WH40K but were never sold to the public. Fast-forward to 2012 when Wargames Foundry discovered the moulds of these in their back-catalog and created a new production-mould. These figures are sometimes available from Wargames Foundry directly or as giveaways at events."

Try giving Wargames Foundry a ring or email they may be able to sort you out with these miniatures.

There was talk on the Oldhammer forum and associated Facebook group that Bryan Ansell searching for the third Man-Fish miniature so the he could convert it to a Sci-Fi Fishman thus completing the range."

60p each!!!

They would make good fishy henchmen for my Space Riders Picsean Warrior.

There are other excellent painted examples out there on the web, here is a superbly painted example by Paul over on his Sho3box blog.

Citadel Judge Dredd Perps Part 3

Borag Thungg Earthlet,

I am back working on my citadel Judge Dredd miniatures as I absolutely love these 1985 sculpts, scale and being a hardcore 2000ad trying to identify which characters the each miniature is based on.

Today's work all from the JD3 Perps and Muties range.

Up first is 'Mutie in Dress' was a member of the mutant band lead by Morgair and appeared in the Cursed Earth saga progs 65-66 plus the superb star pinups below by Brian Bolland. She is armed with a spit carbine and sports a ballerinas tutu and tights.

Next up we have 'Brother Gomorrah' who is also one of Morgair's cursed earth muties and also appeared in progs 65-66 and the star pinups below, I do have the rest of the miniatures that make up the mutant band to paint up.  I should also mention like most of the miniatures in the Judge Dredd range this one has a variant of sorts 'Theobald Wen'.

Here we have another Mutie 'Three Eyes', again the name says it all, armed with a large rusty chopper and revolving spit pistol.

This next one has the appearance of a Mutie but I believe he is a Perp, 'Fettuchini' he appears to be mix of several sculpts which is very common in this range, he also has three eyes so makes a great mutie. I don't recall him being a in Dredd story but that doesn't mean that he wasn't. I got a bit carried away with this one and opted for stars and stripes muscle pants and vest :D

Fettuchini

Next we have a mutie called 'Mr Fields' a variant of the 'Link Angel' sculpt, I am sure I remember this character but when I put asked for help from the 2000ad twitter community nobody could recall him so I am stumped at the moment. He is armed with a M15 rifle a 20th centuary artifact.

Lastly we have the 'Citi-Def attacking' miniature at the time of painting I only had one copy of this miniature at the time of painting (and now have 4 so there may be a future squad project in the works) and he was in a real bad state, he was badly stripped, very dark grey and covered in oxidation that made the miniature appear like the Michelin man, most of the detail was obscured so I had to rely my experience in cleaning up very old preslotta Chaos Beastman and I dropped it in a bath of white vinegar for a couple of hours, there was some furious fizzy and the oxidation and paint flecks crumbled away, by the miracle of chemistry the miniature came back to life and the majority of the detail was restored. I then had to thoroughly rinse the miniature and dry it before sealing with a good undercoat, paint job and varnish. I know that other miniature restorers neutralize the white vinegar first with bicarbonate of soda first and then rinse in distilled water but I think that's a bit of a faff and just give a good blast of cold water for a few minutes.

A quick observation on the Judge Dredd miniatures weapons, I see many of the same weapons reoccuring all through the range also on the Rogue Trader Fishmen and in the Paranoia range which makes me think that all these weapons were cast up on mass and used by the sculptors when required.

I have recently acquired a massive lot of Judge Dredd the miniatures game Rulebooks and about 50 miniatures so I am hoping to find out some of same characters from the citadel range and do some comparison painting.

Most important is that Prog 2000 of 2000AD is out tomorrow featuring some of our most loved characters return so go buy and enjoy we need to keep british comics alive!

I hope you enjoyed, Florix Grabundae

Citadel Judge Dredd Perps Part 4

Borag Thungg Earthlet,

Here's this months 1985 citadel Judge Dredd miniatures I have been working on in my spare time.

These miniatures are again all from the JD3 Perps and Muties range.

First up is 'Mutie with Bazooka' although it looks more like a Lazooka from Rogue Trooper to me, again another member of the mutant band the 'Mutie Brotherhood' lead by Morgar and appeared in the Cursed Earth saga progs 65-66 plus the superb star pinups below by Brian Bolland where he is sitting in a shopping trolley eating pizza. He sports a Fez which reminds of 'the Turk' character from Kelly's Heroes.

Next another Mutie Brotherhood member 'Brother Jobee' you can see him eating Heinz beans in the pin-up below, armed with a double barrel shotgun and wearing riding boots dressed in jodhpurs, this mutie has style.

Bottom left - Brother Jobee eating beans.
Bottom right - Mutie with Bazooka sitting in a shopping trolley eating pizza.

Brother Jobee is standing right of Morgar looming over Judge Dredd.

Next up we have 'Monkey Face' another Mutie armed with Spit carbine, I chose an orange jump suit as it reminded me of the old Planet of the Apes movies, I am surprised no company ever made a licensed Planet of the Apes wargame back in the day as there are loads of cool ideas for miniatures in the movies.

Check out the orange jump suits

Next we have a perp named 'Kelv armed with two pistols and sporting some sort of mechanical or armoured trousers, I don't remember this character in any of the stories if you do let me know, I am guessing the name is wrong. His face has real character and reminds me of the leader of the gasoline refinery in Mad Max 2.

Kelv - back

Lastly we have two 'Citi-Def' miniatures, 'Citi-Def with Machine Gun' and 'Citi-Def', I did these in  the same colour scheme as the last months Citi-Def attacking miniature I blogged about, still undecided on which Citi-Bloc they are going to represent.
These two miniatures have also been sold by FASA as Temporal Marauders for their 1986 Dr Who range and are actually still available on various online shops like this one. I have read somewhere that these were incorporated in the Judge Dredd range in 1986 after the FASA Dr Who range but my Judge Dredd versions have 1985 on the slotta tags and on my FASA versions you can clearly see on bottom of the metal base the outlines of the slotta tags before the metal disc was molded around the tags or that's what the evidence suggests, not that it matters though.

Morgar's now prepped and on the painting table along with some wreckers so keep a eye on my twitter feed for work in progress images.

I hope you are following this blog as there is so many more to come, Florix Grabundae

Rogue Trader - Space Minotaur

Hi, today we have another of Diego Serrate's Space Raiders miniatures the Space Minotaur from the original Kickstarter campaign, heavily influenced by the original Rogue Trader Minotaur's from the 1989 Easter Sale Flyer.  I found this miniature a lot more difficult to paint and get into than the Piscean Warrior although I do love his gun as it reminds of the Manglore's guns (Zorg ZF-1 Pod Weapon) in the Fifth Element movie.

This is the second miniature I have painted from this range my first was the Piscean Warrior which can be seen here: painted Piscean Warrior.
Unlike the Piscean Warrior I have not seen many painted examples of this miniature except these two great blog post from JB over on Leadplague and Roebeast.

The Kickstarter campaign can be followed here: Space Raiders and for those of you who really loved Citadel's Realm of Chaos miniatures checkout Diego's The Pantheon of Chaos.

Here is a selection of miniatures from the Space Raiders campaign.

As you can see there is quite a selection of miniatures, space Zoats, an Ambull, renegade Orks and there's still more in development.

Still on the topic of non citadel miniatures I would recommend you go over to http://blindbeggarminiatures.blogspot.co.uk/ and check out all of Paul's lovely Pulp, Steampunk, Cthulhu type miniature sculpts, Paul sent me a gift of this native Amerian indian looking fellow brandishing what looks like a Vicker's gun I think he would not look out of place in the Cursed Earth or on Rogue Trader's Helsreach.

Thanks for visiting
