Borag Thungg Earthlet,

Here's this months 1985 citadel Judge Dredd miniatures I am still working on.

These miniatures are again all from the JD3 Perps and Muties range.

First we have Morgar leader of the 'Mutie Brotherhoodin the Cursed Earth saga progs 65-66.  Also Fettuchini is a variant of this miniature. I have already painted several members of his gang, Brother JobeeBrother GomorrahMutie with BazookaMutie in Dress and Squid Face and Brother Obee are being prepped up at the moment so you hopefully see these soon.

Morgar - front

Next we have 'The Fink' member of the Angel family (gang) who attempts to get revenge on Judge Dredd for the the death of his family in Progs 193-196, like most of my miniatures I had already painted this back in the day and you can see him here 'Old Fink' but I felt the need to strip him and have another go 20+ years on.

Here we have (Mrs) Mad Ma Mahaffy a character from the early days of Judge Dredd Prog 18, the head under her arm is a 'Brainbloom' (and that's as much as I am going to tell without spoiling the story).
Mrs Mad Ma Mahaffy

Next we have two of the three Wreckers in the range, 'Wrecker Charging' and Wrecker 'Advancing' from the story 'The Wreckers' in Progs 374-375.  I have seen a few painted examples of these miniatures and most tend to go for the Ninja black look which if you look at the cover of Prog 375 below you will see was not the case as they were ordinary citizens (perps).

And finally we have 'Don Helmut' the name says it all, he is a variant of one of the Wrecker sculpts I have yet to repaint and has had a head swop with the Security miniature, as well as his Wreckers crowbar and badge he also appears to carrying a Lawgiver , Let's hope he doesn't pull the trigger.

RT602 - Ambull

Hello, well finally got around to painting one of the few alien miniatures created for the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader universe.

The Ambull which was first described in the Rogue Trader rulebook page 207 and the miniature sculpted by Michael Perry was released March 1988 under the RT602 product code, I never did get the Rogue Trader product code system.

I went for the traditional colour scheme as shown in White Dwarf 99 and while painting this miniature it got me thinking that maybe it had its origins in the Umber Hulk of the Dungeons and Dragons universe or even the Ankheg of the Forgotten Realms setting as they both have similarities.

Here's my version.

Below are the first game rules for Ambulls taken from page 207 of the 1987 Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook.

The first Ambull, the miniature lost those antennae near it's mouth

Below are the rules for Ambulls with points cost taken from page 64 of White Dwarf 99.

The D&D Umber Hulk, I think you'll agree there is a likeness.

There's another great Ambull post over on sho3box, I recommend you visit and follow for essential reading.

Thanks for popping in and please follow as Space Zoats are coming soon.

Rogue Trader - TSF18 Space Zoat Loorg

Welcome back, today's miniature is from the classic Warhammer 40,00 Rogue Trader Space Zoat's range, this one is named 'Loorg' and classified as a Hero, there were three other classes of Space Zoat, Officer, Trooper and Heavy Weapons Trooper.

I haven't read much fluff about this race and only what was written in the section from page 201 from the Warhammer 40,00 Rogue Trader rulebook (which I have included below for your enjoyment), I am sure this race was mentioned in Ian Watson's 1993 Warhammer 40,00 novel 'Space Marine' and were slaves of the Tyranid Fleet (fleet name escape me).

I didn't find this the most enjoyable miniature to paint and am dreading painting the other three miniatures from this range but I went for the classic green theme of the adverts.

I took this image from the classic Warhammer 40,00 Chapter Approved - Book of Astronomican as I love the name graphic and again confusing product code, TSF18??? (answers in the comments section please).

Diego's Space Raider's Kickstarter campaign has a new version of the Space Zoat under the Alien Monsters header below and I look forward to painting this one and adding it as the leader of my Citadel Zoats.

Thanks for visiting, now get following :)

p.s. I have a spare Space Zoat Loorg for trade if you have anything really juicy for me :)

Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in Terminator Armour

Hello, today's miniature is an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor in Terminator Armour, a classic and much painted Oldhammer 40K miniature sculpted by Jes Goodwin and released in 1989, he armed with a Psycannon and Force Rod shaped like a Crozius Arcanum, festooned in Imperial livery, skulls, scrolls and arcane symbols whose meaning is long lost, he is the spiritual brother of the Imperial Inquisitor in Terminator Armour as they were released and packaged together so if you owned one you usually owned the other, you can see my Imperial Inquisitor in Terminator Armour here. (Updated photos below)

The Ordo Malleus were introduced in the Realm of Chaos - Slaves to Darkness book in the Warhammer 40,000 'Dark Millennium' section on page 246, the Psycannon made it's appearance here on page 250, he also appeared in Space Hulk illustrations and rules but I can't remember where at the moment.

I decided to have a go and taking some better photos of my Imperial Inquisitor in Terminator armour as the photos in his original post are quite poor.

Borag Thungg Earthlet,

Here's my latest batch of 1985 citadel Judge Dredd miniatures, I have tried to discipline myself and do more weaponless citizens, the hoi polloi of Mega-City One's streets.

Again these miniatures are mostly from the JD3 Perps and Muties range with the occasional Slaughter Margin campaign miniature.

First up we have 'Bel' from the Slaughter Margin range a later 1987 sculpt, looks a bit like Richard Beckinsale, this Perp is a Scrawler and carries a couple of spray cans, an excellent addition to my non-combatant miniatures.

Bel the Scrawler from Slaughter Margin - front

Next up is another inhabitant of Big Meg, nameless 'Citizen' who carries a very goblinoid looking mutie a baby, I took a few photos of this one to show you the baby too.

Next we have 'Squid Face' of the 'Mutie Brotherhoodin the Cursed Earth saga progs 65-66. I have already painted several members of his gang, Morgar the leader, Brother JobeeBrother GomorrahMutie with BazookaMutie in Dress, Brother Obee is the final Brotherhood member to complete and he'll be finished soon.

Continuing with have another Mutie 'Skink' I don't recall this one from any Dredd stories but I will be keeping my eye out for him as I read old progs at bedtime, he'll make a excellent Cursed Earth desperado and he is a variant of the Perp miniature 'Dib', I aim to do a post comparing all the Judge Dredd variants and how they were used to seed other ranges one day.

Here we have Captain Ravioli a miniature I painted back in the early 1990's and tidied up a little, he has Link Angels head and Rhode Island Red's body.

The next two miniatures are Judge Dredd Uglies, there were about 16 variants of 3 poses, the two below I also painted back in the early 1990's, I have loads of these Uglies and hope to paint enough for an Ugly Mug Ball (Prog 447) one day. We have Pig face and Flat Face below.

LE9 Space Skeleton

Hello, today we a fun little miniature, another of the 'not so' Limited Edition's that Citadel Miniatures churned out, the Space Skeleton, released in 1986 and sculpted by Bob Naismith, I don't think there's anything else to really tell about this miniature.  The only undead I remember from the Warhammer 40,00 Rogue Trader rulebook were Vampires (Page 205) and Zombies (Page 207) so I guess you could use the rules for the latter to cover 'Space Skeletons' (I love saying that :D).  I was trying out the new Citadel Technical gemstone 'Soulstone Blue' paints on it's helmet visor and I think it worked quite well simply paint the area bright silver and wash the glossy thin colour over the top for effect.

There's other great painted examples over on Solegends, another here at Sho3box and on JB's blog Leadplague so get visiting them and show the guy's some love :)

Tim Prow's Diehard miniatures Kickstarter has a brilliant tribute to this miniature, it's a must see here on twitter which reminds me there is a thriving Oldhammer and old school miniatures/games following over on twitter that is worth checking out, it's really cool and tends to be a bit more mature than the Facebook carnage.

Next up we have 'Rambones' a Oldhammer miniature from the classic Citadel Miniatures C Series days, a 1987 C17 Skeleton sculpted I think by Aly Morrison. I painted this one up at the same time as my Space Skeleton and decided to include it here as it needed a home. Another play on the 1980's movie character Rambo which the citadel sculptors were quite keen on, I have a few citadel Rambo parodies so I may do a post on this subject one day.

LE1 Space Orc

Hi Folks, today's Oldhammer treat is the 'not so' Limited Edition LE1 Space Orc.

From what I believe the first Space 'Orc' to appear in the citadel ranges, there were other Orcs with a sci-fi twist like the Bazooka Orcs, Sleazy Rider and the Orc with machine gun in the Marauder miniatures Orc range but not until the launch of Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader where Orcs were renamed to Orks did true Space Orks come along, was this sculpt just a flight of fancy or a test miniature for the early development of Warhammer 40,000, many other miniatures appeared in the limited edition range featuring a sci-fi theme or technology equipped, Space Skeleton, Wizard with machine gun did anyone ever incorporate these into their early Rogue Trader games?  I do remember we used loads of  Sleazy Rider's.

What I like about this Orc is the primal animalistic appearance of the Orc, gorilla like, hunched over with big long limbering arms, giant tusks, he reminded me of The Planet of the Apes movies so much that I gave him a little U.S. flag on his arm, he wears a Space suit retro fitted with armour plates and a flight pack and armed with a crude combi-weapon of double barrelled blaster and battle-axe!!!

There is a nicely painted example over on Solegends.

These photos appear a little dark I may have to redo them.

Citadel Judge Dredd Perps Part 7

Borag Thungg Earthlets,
Today we have more scrotnig miniatures from the 1985 citadel Judge Dredd miniatures range, as usual these miniatures are mostly from the JD3 Perps and Muties code with the occasional ugly and Slaughter Margin campaign miniature, I was really trying to discipline myself to get the Perps and Muties painted before moving on but have already become distracted by the Dark Judges.  I hope you enjoy my latest work as there are some really cool miniatures here, any photos with a blue background were taken in my office by my mate Andy who is a wildlife photography nut, we have been trying to apply his skills to miniature photography, let us know what you think.

First up we have 'Rhode Island Redfrom the JD3 Muties code, this miniature is the holy grail to many a JD miniature collector, I am lucky enough to own two, I have seen these go for £25 each on eBay such is the demand, this hideous mutie appeared in the story 'The Fear That Made Milwaukee Famous' which featured in the Judge Dredd Annual 1981 so hunt that one down if you want to know more about him. I painted him in the colours of the comic strip,  lots of good paint jobs of this miniature about, like this one here on Sho3box.

Second up we have 'Two-Heads' another miniature from the JD3 Muties code a 1985 sculpt.

Next we have 'Citizen 1' from the Slaughter Margin range sometimes referred to as 'Citizen Hetfield' probably as he bears some resemblance to Mettalica's James Hetfield with his late 1980's haircut, another great addition to my non-combatant miniatures, I ended up going full goth on this one and think it works.

Next we have the last of the three Wreckers in the range, 'Wrecker' from the story 'The Wreckers' in Progs 374-375. Here are his mates.

Wrecker

Here we have 'Kneepad Jones' a JD3 Perp, the name is really familar I am sure he was in a story but can't find anything on it so i guess I am mistaken although he could of been in a daily star strip, this miniatures in made up of a lot of bits and pieces of others, which came first who knows? I love his outfit totally Mega-City One.

Kneepad Jones - front

Kneepad Jones

Next is 'Jason Basin' sometimes mistaken for 'Perpolito' due to the grainy images of the original adverts, I am quite familar with his name has this was one of the names my mate would scream at me in the playground as children :D
I took a lot of photos of this miniature to show off his amazing outfit and appears to have a problem remembering is left, right, up and down as both kneepads and boots are labelled with 'L' and 'R', his helmet has 'UP' on it and arms have up and down arrows, bizarre there must be story in there.

Here we have a Ugly 10 one of the many Uglies variants (I nearly have them all) which I painted up in the early 1990's, rebased him to my current favourite scheme and jazzed him up a little.  Sculpting/Moulding around his outreached hand was a bit rough so I filed it and painted it up as a Mega-city Cred.

And lastly we have another miniature from the Slaughter Margin range and another miniature which I painted up in the early 1990's, rebased and tidied up, it's quite tough work painting over gloss varnish, this one is 'Vid Crew Camera', a later sculpt/variant he has the body of an Ugly with the head of Kneepad Jones, I am still looking for 'Vid Crew Sound' to complete my collection if anyone out there has him.

Space Marine - Mark 1 Thunder Armour

Hello, something a bit strange for me today, if you are a twitter follower you may have noticed that one night I got a little bored and wanted to do something a bit different so I dug out a resin (Finecast) Space Marine in Mark 1 "Thunder Armour" from the Armour Through the Ages set that Games Workshop released about 3 years ago, why a Finecast and not the metal equivalent? well I wanted a quick start minimal prep, as you are well aware resurrecting your Oldhammer miniatures takes time, stripping, cleaning up oxidation, etc, etc I wanted an immediate start and prepping this one took about 5 minutes.

I believe this was designed by John Blanche, sculpted by Jes Goodwin and released in 1990. There were two versions of this miniature, this one is armed with a primitive bolt gun and sword, the other a Power Axe/Pole Arm type weapon.

I really wanted to achieve a Techno-barbarian feel and went with Imperial Roman palette, plenty of browns and tans while leaving the shoulder pads black to tie him in with the small Flesh Tearers project I have on the backburner.  I was going to stick on a proper old school metal back pack but it looked to small and didn't sit right so I went with the one supplied and as it was also resin it took 2 minutes to magnetise with tiny rare earth magnets, this modification made it a lot easier to paint.

Space Marine in Mark 1 "Thunder Armour" - front

Space Marine in Mark 1 "Thunder Armour" - back

Space Marine in Mark 1 "Thunder Armour" - magnetised power pack

Background from White Dwarf 129
More Thunder Armout fluff from the Lexicanum:

Mark I plate was developed by the techno-barbarian factions that dominated Terra prior to the Emperor's ascendancy. When the Emperor began his conquest of Earth, the "Thunder Warriors", the proto-Space Marines which formed part of his retinue, were armoured in the same way as the soldiers of the other warlords. A thunderbolt and lightning symbol was displayed on the breastplate of warriors loyal to the Emperor - this was the personal badge of the Emperor in those days, predating the Imperial Aquila which only became the symbol of the Imperium much later. The emblem gives the suit its common name – "Thunder Armour."
Thunder Armour was not an enclosing suit and offered no life support functions, being unnecessary while the fighting was confined to Terra and the similar environments of Luna and Mars. This early armour was produced on a completely local basis and as such individual suits varied heavily and their exact designs were often a matter of personal taste.
The main part of the armour is the massive powered torso which encloses the chest and arms. Coiled energy cables beneath the armour plating transmit power from the power pack on the back to the arms, greatly increasing physical strength by a factor of between 3 and 4 times. Since fighting on Terra during this period was primarily close-quarters, the strength of a warrior's chest and arms was of paramount importance. The legs of this armour Mark are typically not power-armoured at all, but are enclosed in tough padded breeches. The best-equipped warriors sometimes wore armoured greaves and armoured boots, and such additional protection was common amongst the Thunder Warriors.
As with all powered armour, the power supply is contained with a notably bulky back-mounted unit, most of which is taken up by cooling systems designed to prevent the entire armour design from overheating.
Although it is very rarely used in the 41st Millennium, some suits of Thunder Armour are maintained for ceremonial purposes.

This ancient style of armour is noticeably noisier than later Marks.

Judge Dredd - The Dark Judges

Greetingsss!, as you can see my side project of painting all of the 1980's Citadel Miniatures Judge Dredd Perps got derailed for a week while I was reading the massive pile of 2000AD progs mounting up on my bedside table, I absolutely love the story of 'Cursed The Fall of Deadworld', especially the colouring and it got me going through my collection of Judge Dredd Complete Case Files (as the comics are in the loft) and reading any story featuring the Dark Judges, this lead to me rummaging through my Dredd miniatures box and fishing out the Dark Judges for a paint job, now I have painted these characters many times over the years and I have never been pleased with the outcome, I remember my enamel versions and they were dreadful, anyway the Fall of the Deadworld's dull art inspired me to have another go so here you go.

The Crime isss life, the sssentenssse is paint!

JD11 - The Traitor General

Good evening, this draft has been hanging around for ages so I thought I better complete it for your enjoyment. Today we have the Traitor General from the 1985 Citadel Miniatures 2000ADJudge Dredd Range, code JD10, this guy is one of my favourite miniatures not only because of his burnt grotesque appearance and being Rogue Trooper's arch nemesis in the comics but because of the lovely Rogue Trader miniatures he helped spawn, in typical fashion of the Rogue Trader range using the original sculpts from the Judge Dredd range and many others as a base. (have you spotted the Gothic Horror ones yet? I will show you another time) The infamous Imperial Inquisitor Augustus would be just another miniature without a face if the Traitor General hadn't give him that hideous head or the imperial Official would be weapon less if the Traitor General hadn't let him have an arm, I could go on, you don't realise these things until you are painting a miniature and you think 'hey! where have I painted these legs before...'
He still about if you are interested read 'Hunted' in fairly recent 2000Ad progs,  anyway enough rambling here he is.

I also started testing colour schemes for my Imperial Army miniatures, I was trying to achieve the colours from the original adverts but on closer inspection I think the miniature painters just used one grey, I used about 5 vallejo model colour grey's :D

Rogue Trader - Mercenaries

Hello, with the good wife still away in NYC I am making the most of the painting and blogging time, you will not see this much activity a week from now so lap it up my friends.

As you know I completed my first major project sometime ago, I have still got finish it off some proper photography on this project but it is done, it's sister project was the RT502 - Mercenaries and although I cherry picked and painted 'Old World Jack' and 'Inquisitor Augustus' some time ago, this small code has been nagging me for some paint for a long time, so I am currently 10 miniatures in to a 16 miniature code, easy eh? funnily enough I do have most of these painted already as Catachan jungle fighters for Warhammer 40K 2nd Edition but I couldn't bothered to strip them as they are half decent may need just a spruce up.

All the RT502 Mercenaries were sculpted by Bob Naismith except 'Shorty' and 'Iron Bonce the squat' (not sure when?) and released in White dwarf 95 in 1987 thanks to Axiom's blog post which confirms these are Bob's sculpts, I have used plenty of greys on these guy's to make them look like Imperial Army deserters and added some variations like Desert uniforms.

Many of these characters appeared in illustrations in the Rogue Trader Warhammer 40,000 rulebook so where possible I have took a snippet shot of them.

The characters like 'Sarge' Rockhard remind me of the cool characters from films like The Dirty Dozen and Cross of Iron, along with the comics the designers would may have grown up with like Warlord, Battle with their Rat Pack story drawn by Carlos Ezquerra of 2000Ad Judge Dredd fame who appears to often base his main character on James Coburn. I think Colonel Schaeffer's last Chancers are direct descendants of these influences.

Anyway onto the miniatures, enjoy!

First up we have a much loved miniature 'WorldBurner' illustrated in the Rogue Trader Warhammer 40,000 rulebook (and somewhere else I think), appears to have some sort of assault uniform and weapon.
Worldburner - front

Worldburner - back

Worldburner - RT Rulebook page 172

Next up we have 'Plundering Pete', same uniform to Worldburner, maybe some sort of ranking on the shoulder of his bandolier, I painted him up as a renegade Tallarn guardsman.
Plundering Pete - front

Plundering Pete - back

Is this Pete - RT Rulebook page 221

'Abbadon' is a repurposed miniature and first appeared on 1st Flyer March 1987 as a 'Ground Combat Trooper' but it as this miniature is tagged IPC and dated 1985 so it fairly obvious from appearance that this miniature is a Rogue trooper Souther that never made into the '8' miniature JD10 & 11 code. It's not the best sculpt so I don't know if that was the problem or that the code could not be an odd number for packing purposes, JD10 & 11 are both 4 distinct characters.
Abbadon/Souther - front

Abbadon/Souther - back

Next we have 'Mad Morris' storming ahead with his Lasgun, I had to do this one in Imperial Army colours, dynamic pose, his outfit quite typical of the Imperial Army so definitely a deserter.

Mad Morris - front

Mad Morris - back

'Hacker Harris' really reminds me of Philthy Animal from the heavy metal band Motorhead, with his wild hair and cut off jacket, he appears to have the same head as the Space Marine Captain Huron Grimm the face of this miniature was tough to paint you really need a bendy brush and a dentist mirror to get into the eyes due to the positioning of the head.
Hacker Harris - front

Mad Morris - back

'Space-dout Sam' is a 1st Flyer March 1987 miniature 'Imperial Heavy Infantry' that like the others didn't fit with the direction the Imperial Army was going in so found it's way into the Mercenary code, he has heavy battle armour with side deflector shields and a really great sculpted on flight pack which was a joy to paint.

Space-Dout Sam/Imperial Heavy Infantry - front

Space-Dout Sam/Imperial Heavy Infantry - back

'Sarge Rockhard', who appears to have the same head as 'Plundering Pete', uniform reminds me of the Chainsaw Warrior so I went for a similar colour scheme, I really had to fight the temptation to paint him with a cheesey 'The Sweeney' Robbers mask.

'Sarge' Rockhard - front

'Sarge' Rockhard - back
'Sarge Rockhard - RT Rulebook page 109

'Iron Bonce' the squat, another 1st Flyer March 1987 miniature first labelled as 'Space Dwarf' encased in a full battle armour together with flight or power pack (whichever you prefer), what's not to love about this miniature, although the first wave of squats are cute, I wish more of these were made, maybe it is proto exo-armour he is wearing?, it's much nicer than the horrid fantasy squat exo-armour of later years. Note he has the 'M' insignia that appears on several Rogue Trader miniatures and has it roots in 2000AD's Rogue Trooper.

Iron Bonce the Squat - front

Pirate is another 1st Flyer March 1987 miniature but this time the sculptor has removed the sword and scabbard of the C Series Fighter 'Cedric' and replaced it with one of the weapons used on the citadel Judge Dredd ranges, this miniature never got reproduced anywhere else. I went for the glam look of the 1980 Flash Gordon movie, reds and golds complement his camp outfit.

Rogue Trader - Mercenaries Part 2

Hello, I hope you enjoyed my last blog post featuring some of the RT502 - Mercenaries, I am trying to keep the momentum going between this project and my quest to paint all of the Citadel miniatures Judge Dredd Perps which is going well but is going to take another 2 years or so with the interruptions I have planned like completing the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader 1st Flyer March 1987 miniatures and a personal favourite of mine the Slocombes Warbots and SFD Robots which are still sitting in their blisters waiting to be opened for your enjoyment (photos will be taken to upset the collectors, is that a form of trolling?  😆) so bear with me.

You can see how some of the projects are getting on in my Gallery.

Anyway first up today is 'No-Face Fargo' from the RT502 - Mercenaries code who started life as a Imperial Light Trooper on the Warhammer 40,000 (Rogue Trader) 1st Flyer March 1987 and another miniature depicted in the rulebook, a variant of the 'Imperial Garrison Trooper/Kylla Condotti' 1st Flyer/RT502 -Mercenaries miniature who's tab says 'Low Tek Trooper' in the case of 'No-Face Fargo' he has a blank tag label so I reckon he is the later sculpt of the two, the infamous Imperial Assault trooper/Judge Dredd Mek shares the same head.  This miniature ended up in several blister codes over its lifespan.  His name is based on the famous historical mercenaries the Condottieri for anyone interested.
The major appeal to a lot of Rogue Trader fans is the sculpted on back pack which was the norm in the first releases and many fans would love to see this done again. I went for a palette of blues for this miniature designing my own Imperial navy uniform and imagine him with his mask in a low gravity/oxygen boarding action.

and it's time for some Abhumans

Secondly we have 'Shorty' the Halfling eventually the nickname Ratling became the norm for these guys, another one of the RT502 - Mercenaries usually for this code not sculpted by Bob Naismith I believe but I don't know who yet.  Complete with Judge Dredd style boots, elbow/knee pads, mithril/mesh shirt and a bolt pistol that is the size of a bolter for this character, his helmet is an excellent sculpt and was a joy to paint, I need to mention the cooking pot and spoon on his backpack too even Space Halflings need breakfast, elevenses, and brunch before tossing 'the one nut to rule them all' into the fire.

Lastly we have the infamous 'Beastman Trooper Gaxt' from the 1987 first Rogue Trader Imperial Army code, semi dressed in army uniform maybe because his beastman side cannot be tamed as he goes topless with studded armbands, carrying an autogun, a really cute chain knife or short sword and has a weirdstone dangling from his belt.  Many W40K gamers have created some really amazing Imperial Guard Beastmen units over the years and it all started with this guy.

It appears that the games/miniature designers at Games Workshop know how dear we still hold 'Gaxt' to our hearts and there may be money in it (cynical?) so have churned out a Necromunda Beastman Bounty Hunter for all you fans out there. (p.s. I am loving their new direction, I even purchased Silver Tower, is there a new golden age coming?)

Thanks for looking I hope you enjoyed, now get following 😈

Citadel Judge Dredd Perps Part 8

Borag Thungg Earthlets,

Here are my latest offerings from my quest to paint all the Perps from the 1985-87 citadel Judge Dredd miniatures range.

These miniatures are again all from the JD3 Perps and Muties range with a Slaughter Margin character for good measure.

First up we have the incorrectly named 'Lorien Speck' whose name tag says 'Frank Zit', Judge Dredd fans may well remember him from as 'Big Frank Zit' the leader of the Zits gang and the Judge Dredd story 'West Side Rumble'2000AD Prog 434 1985 who battled it out with the Sharks gang before Justice Department broke up their juve rumble.  It's nice to see another miniature who is a carbon copy of the comic illustration, it makes it much easier to spot an irregularities. Oh yeah it true 1980's fashion he is armed with Nunchaku which 1980's boy didn't make his own?

For those of you are thinking who was 'Lorien Speck then? He was a Tom Selleck look-alike featured in the Blockmania story 2000AD Progs 236-244 1981 in the lead up to the Apocalypse War epic.

Next up we have 'Zuggy Spotz' another incorrectly named miniature and again his tag reveals the true name, he is 'Crazy Joseph' another member of Big Frank's gang the Zits appearing in 'West Side Rumble' 2000AD Prog 434 1985, check out the comic image above.  At first I thought he was a Red Indian when I found him in my Judge Dredd miniatures box as looked like he fitted in with my Slaughter Margin Red Indians.

I think Zuggy Spotz was a Mega Block name in a Judge Dredd story somewhere but I haven't the time at the moment to trawl through every issue to find it, well not today anyway.

Next up we have 'Vid Crew Sound' a miniature from the Judge Dredd Slaughter Margin campaign set, at first I thought this miniature was another of those rare unique miniatures for this range (no variants) as I had trouble identifying his makeup but eventually I found one while prepping a variant it jumped out.  Unlike most of the Slaughter Margin set he looks nothing like his cardboard token (see below) and the sculptor has fashioned a Japanese/Nippon head on him, I suspect Naismith.  It was pointed out by @nergling on twitter that he was holding a 'nice corn on the cob', it is supposed to be a boom mic for anyone confused :D

Lastly we have 'Brother Obee' of the 'Mutie Brotherhoodin the Cursed Earth saga progs 65-66.  Also Kelv is a variant of this miniature. I have already painted all the members of his gang, MorgarBrother JobeeBrother GomorrahMutie with BazookaMutie in Dress and Squid Face.

This completes the JD3 Muties code for me.

And finally I finished off a Ground Zero Games SL-09 COLLATERAL DAMAGE PACK Child as every Judge Dredd scenario is going to need some collateral damage (don't tell the wife I am painting these). I have loads of these from 15+ years ago almost finished and size they fit beautifully with the Oldhammer Citadel Miniatures before the scale creep.

Rogue Trader - Robo-Dog / Judge Dredd - Mega Hound

Welcome back, today I have something really special for you a miniature that has long been a holy grail to me for a long time.

Robo-Dog / Mega Hound - side

Robo-Dog / Mega Hound - front

The Robo-Dog is a Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader 2nd Flyer miniature, I have only ever seen it in two places, the original flyer and the Judge Dredd Slaughter Margin offer sheet.  You got 5 Mega Hound miniatures with the offer I really wish I purchased these.

It has the appearance that it was sculpted by Bob Naismith but if you know better let me know and due to lack of info on it's tab it must have been 1986 or before.  I really love the dynamic pose of this miniature, charging forward like a trained attack dog, I would not be surprised if comic art was copied as 2000ad stories often featured robot dogs.

I pondered for a long time on what colours I was going to paint this miniature, would I go blue like my Adeptus Arbites dog, codex grey of the Imperial Army eventually I drew inspiration from the silver spikey armoured ‘Shrike’ character in my favourite sci-fi novel series Hyperion Cantos, read them if you can, I recommend the Audible audiobook while painting you will not regret it.

What stats could you use for Rogue Trader and Judge Dredd I here you ask, I would go with a small Walker robot from the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue trader rulebook page 119, not too tough and only one wound so a little scary in close combat but killable. (see below)

The Mega Hound Stats from the Judge Dredd Slaughter Margin book. (see below)

It's much better miniature than the accompanying Imperial Assault Trooper / Slaughter Margin 'Mek'.

I have loads of the Mek miniature as it eventually made it's way into the Imperial Army blister packs, here is my current one painted for Judge Dredd, I am hoping to paint one or two more to a better standard for the Imperial Army.

Borag Thungg Earthlets,

Here are my latest offerings from my quest to paint all the Perps from the 1985-87 citadel Judge Dredd miniatures range.

Perps

A favourite of mine 'Fuzz Gun' perp I think featured in a Daily Star strip where Dredd shoots the can attached to the gun covering the perp in hair but memory is hazy on this one so If you recall the story please let me know. I used to hang around with a punk rocker who used a similar thing and always left a black patch of hair on peoples sofa's :D Variants include Slaugther Margins 'Bel'.

Next up we have one the rarer  and lesser seen of the Mega City Defence miniatures of the range 'Citi-Def with Spug Gun'.  This miniatures completes my set of all the Citi-Def from the range, I painted him in the same scheme as the others so the tie in nicely while defending Rowdy Yates block.

Citi-Def with Spug Gun - front

Next is 'One Eye Schumaen' on the tab he is labelled 'Organ Legger', I went for a hispanic Banana City (Ciudad Barranquilla) look for this character, he carries a bag with human body parts spilling out and a bizarre pistol. Variants include Slaugther Margins 'Vid Crew Sound'.

Finally we have a JD5 Klegg, featured in the Judge Dredd story 'The Day the Law Died' (Progs 89 to 108).  These carnivorous Alien mercenaries hired by Chief Judge Cal and paid in lawbreaker flesh.  Only two miniatures were made, I first come across them in my favourite ever White Dwarf 78 and the fabulous display game done by the 'Player's Guild' for Games Day 85, I was obsessed with this display and my late friend and I did everything we could to copy it whilst taking over his parents veranda.

I raved on above about the Judge Dredd display in White Dwarf 78 so in case you have never seen it here it below for your enjoyment.  I remember mutating so many Airifx soldiers with milliput to supplement our small selection of Judge Dredd miniatures at the time.

Slocombe's Warbots - Part 1 - Sam

Hello, today I have a classic Oldhammer miniature that I hardly know NOTHING ABOUT!

This is my first post on Slocombe's Warbot's the 'Sam' Type Light Wardroid, released on the Citadel Miniatures October 1987 Flyer and sculpted by Tony Slocombe.  I am lucky enough to own all 3 miniatures from this range and I am enjoying breaking open those 'Limited Edition' TSF15 WARBOTS blisters open to give them a lick of paint like they should have, 2 other warbots accompany it in the range the MkII 'Sprinter' Assault Droid and 'Deathblow' Class Heavy Droid which will also be receiving a paint job before the year is out.

Now we get to the controversial bit, I have always been a Battletech fan and played it 1988-92 and I found all these warbots reminiscent of the Battletech mechs so when I posted a work in progress photo on Twitter, a friendly follower @Leaky_cheese replied with a Battletech image by  Duane Loose that was almost identical and other followers pointed out a likeness to the Battletech Vindicator mech, yeah, yeah I here say so what, continue reading...

Well this train of thought lead to me having an idea on the origins of this range and I am happy to hear your thoughts. Like the other obscure Rogue Trader robot range released in October 1987, the 'Limited Edition' SFD Giant Robots, well while I was painting some of these lovely Bob Naismith sculpts I noticed they had GW 1984 date stamps on the bottom which harks back to a time when Games Workshop were still producing miniatures for licensed games i.e. Judge Dredd, Eternal Champion, Dr Who, etc, 3 years before the decline of the licensed games so my idea is were the Slocombes Warbots and maybe the SFD Giant Robots created for an early attempt of 1984 Games Workshop acquiring the Battletech license and failing to do so is why we see these Robots incorporated into the Rogue Trader universe and released 'Limited Edition' maybe trying to claw some money back from this endeavour?

Or it could be just wild ramblings of a mad robot fan.

I went for an Imperial Army type colour scheme with lots of rust and battle damage it seemed fitting, added a few old transfers from various kits and distressed them, added a bit of colour to the power source and visor.

Anyway enough nonsense here's the picts.

Rogue Trader - Mercenaries Part 3

Greetings, an end is in sight for one of my current Oldhammer projects the RT502 - Mercenaries featured in White Dwarf 95. (I must confess this project is finished I am just publishing another of the ten drafts queued up 😳)

Not the greatest week for photography it was the 'Beast from the East part 1' here in the UK and I think the pictures reflect that.

Another two done, two more to go

Here are my latest offerings.

First we have Breakout Con a cool dynamic looking miniature, storming forward with his modified Bolter, I like this sculpt especially his heavily augmented head, that appears to have eyes, ears, nose and brain modifications.

Breakout Con - front
Breakout Con - back

This miniatures variants include Hacker Harris and Catachan Luke and his head is also used on RT01 Space Marine Brother Dimshade, all Bob Naismith sculpts, it was common for him to reuse base miniatures and parts, it would be interesting to know if he precast certain parts like they did with weapons or did he simply hack the part of a pre existing cast miniature.

I think you will agree that the image the Necromunda Orlock below bears a striking resemblance to Breakout Con and it's nice to see he was rocking the slotted shade look long before this Orlock (and Lady Gaga).

I also remember that the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook featured a squad of these Breakout Con's, is that Communication Officer Orinoco administering Frezon to penal troops? I am sure it is.

East/Fast-Star John another 1987 1st Flyer miniature sculpted by Bob Nasmith, originally he was listed as Imperial Heavy Trooper but like many other seen on previous posted recoded into the RT602 - Mercenaries and as his tab suggests, he eventually turned up in Imperial Army blisters too.

Fast-Star John - front

A variant of Imperial Heavy Infantry/Space-Dout Sam but this time he has a sculpted on backpack instead of a flightpack.  I own loads of copies of this miniature and have painted him multiple times over the years but this time I went for an Imperial Army appearance, I was tempted to paint the backpack as a medipack but resisted as I have plenty of Imperial Army medics.

Only 2 more Mercenaries to go which are painted now just not photographed and then project complete.

Thanks for reading.

Rogue Trader - Mercenaries Part 4

Hello, Today's we have the final 2 miniatures from the RT502 - Mercenaries code so I am happy to say that's another Oldhammer project complete.  As you know I completed the Rogue Trader RT601 - Adventurers a while ago and now this code is complete I need to decide whether a do the Bob Olley IC301 'Iron Claw' Space Pirates featured in White dwarf 93 or the RT601 Space Pirates from White Dwarf 103.

My final 2 RT602 Mercenaries

For we have 'Kylla Condotti' another Warhammer 40'000 Rogue Trader 1st Flyer miniature who found his way into the RT07/602 - Mercenaries code and Imperial Army blisters.  Originally listed as an Imperial Garrison Trooper and another of those miniatures with a sculpted on backpack which I know you all love. His tab says 'Low Tek Trooper'.   This miniature ended up in several blister codes over its lifespan.  His name is based on the famous historical mercenaries the Condottieri for anyone interested.
The only variant of this miniature is another Mercenary and 1st Flyer miniature No-Face Fargo/Imperial Light Trooper.

Next we have 'Catachan Luke', I have painted this miniature many times as a Catachan Jungle fighter like his name suggests, there are variants of this miniature in the Mercenary range and these are Hacker Harris and Breakout Con.  I went for an Afro-Caribbean race for him as I did this for my Catachan Jungle Fighters in my 2nd Edition Days.

One day I will treat you to my 2nd Edition Jungle Fighter units but I currently can't get through the clutter guarding them in the loft.

Thanks for dropping in, another project complete.

SFD Giant Robots - Scavenger

Hello,
For today's post another classic Citadel Miniature, one of the SFD Giant Robots this time called 'Scavenger'.  Sculpted by Bob Naismith in 1984, the SFD Giant Robots had a limited release in 1987 via the Spring 1987 mail order flyer for use as Warbots in Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader, see page 42 in the  rulebook.

This is my third robot finished from this range, I went for a different approach and painted it very difference compared to the other two I have painted previously which were sharp and bright.  I went for a really waethered, dirty, damaged appearance to reflect it's name Scavenger, started off with the colours of a JCB or CAT plant vehicle and then distressed the paint job with washes and weathering powders to extreme levels, luckily here in Birmingham UK it's been like a building site for years so I have had plenty of reference material and everytime I made it dirty it just wasn't dirty enough compared to what I was seeing on a daily basis.

You can read my previous post on the first two I painted a couple of years ago here and you can read some of my ramblings and own theories on these Robots here.
