Rogue Trader - Piscean Warrior

Hi Folks,
Here is my Piscean warrior or Saharduin to some of you sculpted by Diego Serrate over on the Oldhammer forum and Facebook community, Pisceans are a xenos race of fish like creatures that first made an appearance on the first March 1987 Warhammer 40K mail order flyer (which I have somewhere), the race never saw the light of day in the Rogue Trader book, I guess as it was a larger miniature the logistics of making them into a viable race at the time would prove difficult.  Due to it's scarcity the original citadel miniature goes for quite a price on Ebay nowadays so Diego done all the Rogue Trader fans out there a favour and sculpted his own interpretation of the Piscean warrior that cost less than a modern day metal space marine, personally I prefer his version as the bolt gun on the original Piscean warrior did not sit right with me.  I would like to think he is equipped with some sort of needle pistol (mini harpoons?), a giant shark knife to fend off the predators of his planet and a reverse Aqua-lung to pipe H2O into his gills for survival.

I painted the Piscean warrior as if he was coming out of the sea and originally I had gloss varnished him as a wet effect but the iPhone camera didn't like it so I Vallejo matt varnished him.

Orctober Fest

Hi Folks,
Now I don't usually get involved in these themed occasions due to time limitations on my hobby but when I was over at Erny's Place (the foremost place to visit for Oldhammer Orc miniatures) it had me thinking back to my youth, back in the early 1980's I was a lean green fighting machine, nothing else mattered it was Orcs or nothing. We were playing Warhammer 2nd Edition and whatever you could carry down to my late mates house you could field as you can imagine we had some massive games, it usually took a 2-3 hours to setup, 4-5 hours to play and then 2-3 hours to pack away, our 6 week summer holidays were ace.

I fell out of love with the Orcs in the late 80's when they were starting to turn generic and green, Harboth and the black mountain boysEeza Ugezod's Mother Crusher's and Mighty Ugezod's Death Commandos, the C Series and Chronicles miniatures I owned just did not sit right with all the new stuff that came out, the were noticeably smaller and severely lacked character or uniqueness.

Anyway most my citadel Orcs went on eBay over 10 years ago but I kept lots of favourites for D&D so I dug a few Orcs and Goblinoids out today and thought I would share them with you :)

Here we have from left to right:

C14 Snotling (1987), C36 Hobgoblin (1985), C15 Orc(1985), N16 Cave Goblin (1985), C12 Goblin (1985)

and here we have from left to right:

C10 Half-Orc's (1985), 3 ME43 Half Orc's of Saruman (1985)

A paltry contribution to Orctober Fest I know but I hope you enjoy my trip down memory lane

One last word there was only one colour to paint your Orcs back in my day... Citadel Colour Orc Brown! :D

cheers

Hi Folks,
Apologies for my lack of posts, here are few photos of what is happening on the workbench at the moment to tide you over until I finally finish the miniatures (hopefully soon), as many of you will know fitting miniature painting in when you have a seven month year old baby in the house it is quite tough but the odd half hour sessions I manage to fit in are starting to bear fruit.  I probably started too many miniatures at once.

This is all work in progress.

Here are C27 Beastman'Shearmone', C38 Beastmen'Crab man', 'Camel man', 'Owl man' and an old Warrior Maiden 'Mace lady' from the Citadel collectors series.  All they need is basing.

Next we have Chaos Wizards from the Citdael collectors series and a couple of Chaos Familiars'Daemonet' and 'Lune', these miniatures still need plenty of work.

Next we have miniatures that are still being prepared, two cats given to me by Cheetor over at Sho3box (thank you mate) and two Squats from the RT601 Adventurers range, 'Squat Miner' and 'Squat Engineer'.

I hope to have these painted and up on the blog soon,

Thanks for visiting and get following.

Citadel Collectors Series - 1204 Chaos Wizards

Hi Friends, This weeks classic Citadel miniatures are two 1204 Chaos Wizards (Chaos Sorcerers to some of you) from the Citadel Collectors Series and two of my favourite Chaos Familiars, I pulled these out of storage as I was getting bored and needed a change from painting Rogue Trader Adventurers and Chaos Beastmen, it was a nice change to use some colours I rarely use.

Ank'tokh Daemon Claw, Lune, Slargash the Defiler and Daemonet 1

First we have 'Slargash the Defiler', I love his pose it screams "alas poor yorick" as he holds a demons skull definitely a demonologist me thinks.

Slargash the Defiler
Next we have 'Ank'tokh Daemon Claw' who I am envisaging as a blood priest of Khorne, cult leader with gifts of technology, his mechanical arm and technological staff, Khorne dislikes magic and favours technology so it makes sense.  A suitable miniature for W40k and Dark Heresy too.

Ank'tokh Daemon Claw
Here we have 'Daemonet 1' cute little miniature, not particularly challenging but still fun all the same.

Daemonet 1

And lastly we have 'Lune' this miniature was a real joy to paint as it is so leftfield and unique, it looks like he is holding a giant can opener which he intends on using to strip knights of their armour but I might be totally wrong, probably the best Chaos Familiar of all.

Lune
Lots of the Chaos Familiars are still available to buy from Games Workshop, buy now as I don't know how long they will be for sale and show Games Workshop that we still want old miniatures, here are the links to them and other golden oldies on the games Workshop website :)

More C27 and C38 Chaos Beastmen

Hello! Today I put the final brush strokes to my  C27 Beastman 'Shearmone' and C38 Beastmen 'Crab man', 'Camel man', 'Owl man', gorgeous old school miniatures from the 1980's, I have many miniatures from these ranges some are preslotta and some are tagged, I even have some doubles that are both so I imagine at some stage the best of the range must of had their preslotta bases removed and tags added when citadel moved to slotta bases.  There has been some good research on these miniatures over at the Collecting Citadel miniatures wiki.

New paint jobs finished and ready to join the hordes of Chaos

First we have C27 Beastman 'Shearmone' from the Third Citadel compedium, now this is how Chaos Beastmen should look, a truly menancing sculpt by Kevin goblin master Adams I believe, note the pincers for pulling teeth out?.  If you look on his back in the photo below it looks like a precursor to the chaos god Khorne icon although the Disciples of the Red Redemption art work carried the Khorne icon long before this miniature was around I think.

C27 Beastman 'Shearmone' - front
C27 Beastman 'Shearmone' - sideview
Khorngor? C27 Beastman 'Shearmone' - back
Next we have a beastman tagged as 'Camel man', I can't find any catalogue entries for this miniature,  he look like a cross between the two miniatures illustrated below.

C38 Beastmen 'Camel man' - front
C38 Beastmen 'Camel man' - sideview
C38 Beastmen 'Camel man' - back

Is this the answer to my 'Camel man' mystery, a head swap? same head, same body.

Next we have C38 Beastmen 'Owl man', this is the second vintage beastman shaman I have come across, this miniature is smaller than most beastmen but covered in great detail, just one example is his feathered cloak which is has magical talismans and fetishes attached, they were a really nice discovery.

C38 Beastmen 'Owl man' - front
Magic cloak? C38 Beastmen 'Owl man' - back
Catalogue entries were simple sketches back then
Lastly we have C38 Beastmen 'Crab man', this miniature was on a slotta tag without his weapon? I have another preslotta version that has a big club/mace attached to the metal base, I am not sure if this got removed on the later version or my version was damaged but it didn't look like it as the mace is moulded to the base.  There is another beastman made from this same miniature called 'Snake Demon'.

**Update** I managed to find a Crab man on ebay without the mace, HERE, so I pleased that mine is not damaged and citadel removed it at a a later date.

Aside from my Realm of Chaos era Chaos Beastmen in previous posts, I am working on  a regiment of 'true' beastmen, here are my efforts so far.

My true Beastmen regiment grows

On the workbench, more C38 Chaos Beastmen, I haven't been able to identify the beastman in the middle yet, he is holding his axe backwards!!, he is tagged 'beastman', the first one is 'Slug man' and the third is catalogued as 'Beast man'.

If you have any old beastman doubles contact me and we may be able to trade.

RT601 - Adventurers - Squat Engineer

Hi Friends,
Today's miniature is the Squat Engineer from the RT601 - Adventurers range published in White Dwarf 99 back in March 1988, an interesting miniature for a Squat as he seems to be dressed in a spacesuit and using a pair of binoculars while looking into the distance, another nice detail and typical of the humour at the time is that his belly is spilling out of his spacesuit. I imagine he has landed on some distant planet surveying for ore or Promethium.  I painted his spacesuit in a mix of Vallejo bright orange and deep orange with various washes inspired by Russian Cosmonaut's in their orange spacesuits.  I have been painting the Squat Miner too but he is far from finished.

Progress on my project can be seen here

Hello Friends,
I finally got around to finishing the Squat Miner from the RT601 - Adventurers range advertised in White Dwarf issue 99 back in March 1988, I didn't get much enjoyment painting this miniature  and felt it a bit of a chore, my reasons why are the lack of detail and poor sculpting as I think the arm positioning is not right, the details are shallow and I just found it horrible miniature, my paint station is littered with a variety of gorgeous classic chaos beastmen miniatures who deserved attention first but if I am to ever complete this project even the poor miniatures in this range must be painted.

Progress on my project can be seen here

My RT601 collection is now complete as I finally got my hands on a reasonably priced Astropath Korm thanks to Steve Casey, in superb condition too.

I just have to decide who to paint next.

Identity Parade Post 1

Hi Folks,
Fun post today while I am still basing some classic citadel for my next big Chaos Beastman post, I was inspired by the many posts I see on the Facebook wargames trading type groups, you know the sort "can you identify these miniatures for me, oh and tell me their value, oh and now I know what they are worth do you fancy giving me Ebay 'buy it now' prices for them" :D  Anyway joking aside they are not for sale or trade.  My painting time is severely restricted now due to our new baby in the house and I tend to only paint things that warm my heart like classic citadel miniatures from my teenage years.  I started collecting miniatures when I was eleven years old after becoming bored with plastic Airfix, Matchbox, etc and seeing all the exciting D&D stuff that was coming out at the time and over the years I have acquired, traded, inherited and sold a lot of miniatures but I always tend to hang on to interesting miniatures hoping to strip and paint one day, thirty two years on and I was looking through some stored boxes of sci-fi miniatures for some Confrontation miniatures and I thought I wonder who made and sculpted this one and so on and so on.  So if you fancy identifying any of these miniatures be my guest, it's for fun and credits will go photos later to those who do and if it generates some interest another post will follow. I do remember some of the manufacturers but some have got me stumped.  I am sure all these will be heading for the Dettol one day.

Colin  and KayDubstep4 identified the old Citadel Confrontation Hunter gang miniatures but the jury is out on who sculpted them at the moment.

C27 And C38 Chaos Beastmen Painting Continues

Hi, today we have more C27 BeastmenC38 Beastmen and  CH4 Chaos Beastmen fantastic old school miniatures from the 1980's, see more on the pre-slotta miniatures over at the Collecting Citadel miniatures wiki. I am really enjoying painting these miniatures with the goal of having a 'true' beastman regiment their variety and concepts are wonderful, some silly but I am hooked and have amassed quite a backlog of these miniatures to paint so keep your eye on this blog for more to come.

C27 Carrion Man, CH4 Lash, C27 Skarrim
C27(?) Sheep/Lamb Man, C38 Beastman, C38 Slug Man

First we have C27 Carrion Man a truly hideous miniature, a variation of an old Runequest Broo miniature, he will be going in  the front rank and I would like to thanks Jason Gill for this trade directly through the blog, a true trader, fair and honest.  While painting this miniature I noticed he is sporting ancient Spanish Celt-Iberian headgear, I know this as I have painted 100's of ancients over the years.  Those Rhea feet look mean too, +1 attack?

Carrion man - front
Carrion Man - back

Next we have 'Skarrim' another C27 Beastman from the Third Citadel compedium, this one is brutally armed with two meat-cleavers, dogged faced drooling for blood definitely a follower of Khorne, Beastman berzerker anyone?  I think this may be another Kevin Adams sculpt.

Skarrim - front
Skarrim - back
Next we have C38 Beastmen Slug man another revolting creature who seems to have his previous head of a man in his chest. There is another slug man in this range.

Slug Man - front
Slug Man - side
Slug Man - side
Now we have a later CH4 Chaos Beastman 'Lash', it's nice to see a bow armed Beastman, I have several of these to mix into my regiment.

Lash - front
Lash - back

Back to C38 Beastmen we have 'Beastman', a very old miniature, I am not sure what sort of beast he was supposed to be mixed with, you decide.  He has a Warhammer tucked in his belt and a very nice shield with a demon head as the boss and screaming faces around the rim. i have seen another variant of this miniature with a different head, which seems to be the case for a lot of this range.

Beastman - front
Beastman - side showing off his shield

Now we have my mystery Beastman, I said on the Oldhammer FB group that I think it is Kevin Adams sculpt as the armour markings are identical to this C27 Boarman's, it also small chaos star on his armour, here is my painted version, I pondered on what animal he could be mixed with and settled on a Sheep. I have not found him in any early catalogue of the age but he did appear later here.

Sheepman or Lambman?
Sheepman - other side

Orlygg's took a photo of some of Chaos Thugs in Bryan Ansell's Miniature Collection and amongst them were lots of miniatures not from the Chaos range one example was the Wood Elf Champion with axe and Orc head, I love this miniature and it never occurred to me that he would make an excellent Chaos Thug so I got him out of storage and painted him for my Thug regiment. Pale skin and pink hair a perfect thug of Slaanesh.

Remember If you have any old beastmen doubles contact me and we may be able to trade, a couple of peeps have already. :)

Chaos Beastmen Latest Work

Hello, sorry about lack of posts life is so busy at the moment and our hobby suffers but I have managed a little output here we have another C38 Beastman 'Fishman', C27 Beastman Half-man and the highly sought after Realm of Chaos Chaos Beastman with two heads, again all miniatures from the 1980's.

C38 Fishman, this miniature is covered in great detail, shell motifs on his leg plates, crab buckles on his feet, starfish on breastplate, fish scale cloak and a cool jellyfish on his shield, I wisj citadel had gone onto make a whole race of these Fishmen.  This is the first of three variants I have of this miniature, the others are Fishman with Slug man's head and Seahorse man, all posed the same and standing on the shell. For the newbies who do not recognise him he is one of the early preslotta beastmen, see more on the pre-slotta beastman miniatures over at the Collecting Citadel miniatures wiki.

C27 Half-man, a unique miniature that I have never seen painted up on the internet before so this may be a first, this is essentially two miniatures in one as you can see on the back he has another head with one of his arms and both legs facing backwards. It was a joy to paint.

And finally we have the two headed realm of Chaos Beastman, I have seen this miniature exchange hands for stupid money, nice and highly sought after but if you bide your time you can pick him up cheap, 1988 release and I think sculpted by Jes Goodwin but correct me if I am wrong. This guy really should have been a chaos thug as he really doesn't sit right with all the other RoC era beastmen.

I have loads of projects on the go, several C38 Beastmen near completion and mounted Kaleb Daark coming soon so stay tuned.

Hi, my collection of the C38 Beastmen is drawing to close and a only have a few to track down and plenty of doubles to trade to help me acquire them, I absolutely love these first C series Chaos Beastman and although they are not the first ever Chaos Beastmen as there origins lie with the Runequest Broo which I also collect, they are for sure the very stuff of chaos with their wild mutations, individuality and hideousness I like to imagine they would route an opposing lawful army on sight. I think they reflect some of the more crazy art and the chaos attributes of the first Realm of Chaos book Slaves to Darkness, here are my latest painting efforts with the goal of hosting a true Beastman regiment along side my later Realm of Chaos Beastmen.

These miniatures are seriously old released about 1983/4 so they required lots of repairs, the cleaning up of oxidation, corrosion and lead rot now and then as well as 30 year old paint and milliput so if you do decide to collect these lovely miniatures I will advise you now that when you open those trade or ebay packages and are disheartened by their state, don't be and take inspiration from my end results :)
The new recruits Wolfman, Eagle Woman, Snake Demon, Ostrich Man and Camel Man on their way to join the true Beastman regiment.
First we have Ostrich Man, you are lucky to find him with his scythe intact another crazy zoological mutation.
Ostrich Man - front
Ostrich Man - back
Next we have Wolfman, this miniature is tiny and I had to get my 0/5 brush out for this one, he was covered in oxidation and it took about 15 miniatures of brushing with a hard toothbrush and a dip in the acetone to clean him up. I like him and imagine him a Beastman assassin.
Wolfman - front
Wolfman - back
Next we have Camel Man and not the first Camel Man I have painted see this post and it won't be the last as I have another different posed Camel Man a variant of Walrus Man to make three, the sword had completely corroded away and need replacing so in the spirit of the 1980's I repaired it with the sword from a spare sword arm of an Orc from famous Drastic Plastic Orcs (not to be confused with the later Fantasy Regiments Orcs).
I managed to get this image of Drastic Plastic Orcs from Google images, there is so little documented about this lovely early plastic kit.

Camel Man - front
Camel Man - side
Camel Man - other side
Next we have Eagle Woman, the giant belly she sports reminds of the missus when she was pregnant and I am sure she had an axe to grind too, glad that's over :D
Eagle Woman - front
Eagle Woman - back
And finally we have Snake Demon who is a variant of Crab Man (would also has varinats of himself), I am not overly keen on these Demon sculpts due to there simplicity and depth of detail but I had it and it needed painting. Why a Demon wears a thong is beyond me :S

What's currently on the workbench, I hear you ask?
Yes, more Chaos Beastmen

Painting Rust - Brogar Brainbeater

$

Hello Friends, in this post I would like to share a simple technique I used for painting rusty armour, this is the first time I have ever used it on a standard sized miniature but often used it on my Imperial Guard tanks back in the mid 1990's when we were playing Warhammer 40k 2nd edition.  I needed a short break from painting Chaos Beastmen so I when I went through my storage box of chaos miniatures and selected victim for this experiment, who but none other than 'Brogar Brainbeater' fitted the bill with his heavy armour and halberd, he started life as a F5 Marauder and was eventually discontinued and incorporated into the Chaos Thug range, I really like this heavily armoured miniature and wanted to give him the degenerated look of a knight who had turned to chaos.

So this is how I went about it.

What you need:
An old Brush
Tub lid with rim to keep your crushed pastels on as they are really messy
White Spirit (I used Winsor and Newton but any should be fine)
2 artist pastels Orange and Terracotta both crushed
A can of Army Painter Platemail primer spray (only £3 in my model shop)
Vallejo Oily Steel acrylic paint

Method:

  1. Clean up miniature as usual.
  2. Spray with Army Painter Platemail primer.
  3. Constantly wetting the old brush with white spirit,  dip and mix with the Terracotta crushed pastel and paint liberally over miniature getting it in the recesses while leaving some raised areas in the original platemail colour, it is important to keep dipping your brush as the pastels soak up the white spirit in lightening speed and it will go dry.
  4. do the same again with the crushed Orange pastel working it on top of the Terracotta but leaving some Terracotta still visible.
  5. Any raised areas where you wanted to show the original metal but went over it with pastels revisit and carefully paint over with your metal colour in my case Vallejo Oily Steel.
  6. Paint in your details, horns, belts, etc
  7. Base as usual and Acrylic SPRAY varnish, do not brush varnish or you will be left with a reddy brown mess as the pastels go powdery when dry and will reactivate.
  8. You should now be finished, quick and easy.

Here the final miniature I hope you like the results I think it is quite effective.

I hope you enjoyed this post and let me know if you give this technique a go.

More C38 Chaos Beastmen

Hi, for today's post we go back to 'C' series Chaos Beastmen, luckily they vary so much you don't really get bored of them.  I have painted four new additions which all are being drafted into my Morcockian 'true' Beastman regiment.

Four new Chaos Beastmen ready to join their friends
The first Beastman in this post is not actually a Beastman but a Devil from the much loved C18 Night Horror range,  This miniature started life as a Runequest Broo (the original Chaos Beastmen, see Broo previous mention) and he can be seen here but at some time later must have had his arm re-sculpted with the bottle removed replacing it with him making a demonic sign before going into the C18 slottabase molds. His head was available separately too in the Runquest Broo range.  Last thing I would like to say about this miniature is that the original Runequest Broo swigging the bottle appears in the ranks of Byran Ansell's Chaos Beastman regiments here's a photo (thanks Steve), a great pedigree for this miniature indeed.

Devil Night Horror - front
Devil Night Horror - back
Next we have have Sea-horseman from from the C38 Chaos Beastman range, a bizarre creature with armour festooned with all sorts of aquatic creatures and a nicely sculpted chaos star on it's shield, you may have noticed that many of the later Realm of Chaos Slanneshi Chaos Beastmen resemble sea life of some sorts, could Sea-horseman have been inspiration for these miniatures?   I have two more variants of this miniature, Fishman  and Fishman with Slug man's head. (I think Sea-horseman is another miniature I have to thank Steve for)

Seahorse man - front
Seahorse man - back
Next we have another C38 Chaos Beastman simply named again as Beastman who appears to be a variant of the C38 Eagleman, I was not overly keen on this miniature and only painted him for completeness, it's not a great sculpt, he appears to have a grotesque little head grafted onto the side of his head.

Beastman - front
Beastman - back
And finally we have another C38 Chaos Beastman that you don't see around often again simply named Beast man, he was in a terrible condition with lots of brittle metal, the bow just fell off and needed gluing back on, oxidation needed brushing off with a hard brush but the nice thing about this one is that is he is armed with a bow  a rare option for Beastmen, I did really feel the Beastman vibe with this miniature as it looks more like a Half-Orc or Goblinoid, I wanted to give him an unusual skin colour as I did not want him to be mistaken as a goblinoid so I opted for Vallejo Pale Blue which worked well then I realised the finished miniature looked like a cross between Rogue Trooper and an Avatar Na'vi but I am happy with it and he fits in nicely with the others. This Beastman is a variant of the Horned C38 Beastman (better picture to come) who also has variant not standing on a rock when it was later converted to a slotta base mould.

Hi Friends, today I finally got around to finishing Kaleb Daark, I am not going to go into his history as it has been covered in countless blog posts, here and here are two good Oldhammer blog examples. He has been sitting on my paint station for about 6 months and after several disasters during his paint job I almost threw in the towel as this is the third time I have painted this miniature from it's original purchase back in the late 1980's, be warned neat Vallejo game colour Black wash is very dark, I spend hours getting the perfect black following the teachings of an artist I once read saying there is no such colour as black and after several shades of grey (ooer) I was almost finished and then decided to give the miniatures a wash of Vallejo game colour Black wash to add more depth, the miniature turned out like a lump of dusty coal, anyway I put a lot of work in salvaging rather than stripping the miniature and am sort of happy with the end result, I have tried to stay true to the comic strip a homage to the late Brett Ewins with the shield and helmet design but the miniature did deviate from the comic strip in many places which also wasn't always the same in every illustration, I hope you like.

Next we have C27 Chaos Beastman'Kiss of Death', a collection I have now completed :), this miniature I managed to acquire for £2 from a member of the Facebook Oldhammer Trading Group as it had a broken club which I easily replaced with a club from the Warhammer Empire Militia plastics, heresy I know but it looked right to me.

I  always like to do my own research on my miniatures and try to stay clear of others findings as this can be taken as the final answer, I have convinced myself that the 'Kiss of Death' Beastman was not a new sculpt but a modification of another which is very common in early Citadel miniature ranges so after much searching I think the base miniature for this sculpt is from the C32 Slann range either Polo Slave 1 or Slave 2, I think you would agree that the club on Slave 2 is very similar to the 'Kiss of Death' Beastman's original club (if you have him to look at close up), other evidence is that the C27 Chaos Beastman were sculpted by Trish Morrison and the C32 Slann Trish and Ally Morrison are credited as the sculptors.  Not a easy miniature to find painted examples of but I managed to find one by Orlygg on realmofchaos80s, go check it out here.

Next we have some Runequest Broo, the original Chaos Beastmen, it's funny that I acquired these miniatures in a battered none padded envelope in the pub when meeting up with a mate, we were both wrecked and the miniatures were too, originally painted in the early 80's they required a lot of TLC to bring them back from the brink of destruction, not the greatest paint jobs but I had battered painted miniatures with dark grey patches and lead oxidation in places to play with so I was happy with the restorations.

Sometimes charity costs you dearly (well in time anyway)
FF68 Goat-headed Ogre always considered a Broo with the addition of a old, old Citadel Orc axehead

The next 3 are from the Runequest Box 4c: The Broo

Broo with Dagger
Broo with spiked mace
Rhino Headed Broo (I have many more of these to paint up :D)

Hello! Welcome back, it's the end of my holiday season (if only work would stop ringing me during said season) and my miniatures are getting some well deserved attention so I have got back to the task in hand and finished some more Chaos Beastmen, speed painted a classic Citadel limited edition miniature and got caught up in a Yogi frenzy (see below).

First we have preslotta C38 Chaos Beastman'Horseman', well not much to say about this miniature other than it's a naked bloke with hooves who you would struggle to outrun, I remember as a teenager tittering with my rocker mates at this miniatures todger, I'll leave it at that :D

Next we have a CH4 Chaos Beastman'Vrak', I don't think he was meant to be based on any animal in particular which seems to be the case for many of this range and he even has a true Beastman name 'Vrak' departing from the old names like 'Koala-man' (if only he existed :D), the miniatures were very bestial a precursor to where we are today I think.  For the shield I did not have time to paint it so I dug out a arcane armorial decal (another example here) and stuck it on and in this case the gum was faulty so I had to set it with Microsol, a must have for any serious painter/modeller as it sets the decal, sinks in and follows the contours it is adhered to.

Then I had a day off and was sorting out the thousands of slottabases into a new box I purchased from Aldi and low & behold I found the missing foot to Tinman (mentioned here in the comments back in 2013, thanks Orlygg :D) stuck to a 40x40mm base so after breaking off the crudely sculpted replacement and a bit of pinning and medium Superglue he was good as new.  Tinman was a limited edition miniature (LE14) who appeared in the Warhammer Fantasy Battle scenario 'The Crude, the Mad and the Rusty' with his maker 'Oxy O'cetylene' the dwarf engineer (I am not a big fan of dwarves so I won't be painting him in a hurry), I went on to paint him aiming for a heavily corroded look, I was testing the new Citadel Nihilakh Oxide techinical paint as I don't seem to be able to find a good copper oxide colour, for the normal rust I used my tried and tested method detailed here. Overall I am happy with the results and to compliment the rusty colours I added some Autumn tufts with leaf fall, which are widely available on ebay.

The last miniature on today's post is 'Yogi Yakamoto' from the Citadel Judge Dredd range JD13 Sky Surfers, he appeared in the Judge Dredd story 'The Midnight Surfer',  I painted this miniature after being inspired by several pictures of this miniature on the Oldhammer Facebook group. I copied the colours he was in the comic strip except I accidentally painted his chest which should have been flesh coloured. More will follow as I enjoyed painting this miniature.

Here's my new box from Aldi with all my spare slottabases neatly organised, we'll see how long that lasts, plastic shields next. :D

Hey, I am slowly updating the photos of some of my older posts and here is the first updated post, I hope you enjoy.

Here is today's first miniature from the RT601 - Adventurers range, a Space Amazon, see here also Rogue Trader Adventurers, Mercenaries, Pirates - Collectors Guide.

I am sure this model was based on John Blanche's 'Amazon' painting, my picture is taken from the Ratspike book.

John Blanche's 'Amazon'

She makes a great addition to an Inquisitorial warband and reminds me of characters from the Eisenhorn and Ravenor novels.  She is available to use whenever we play the W40K RPG Dark Heresy.

Another similar miniature is the LE15 - Chaos Amazon model another miniature based on another one of John Blanche's paintings, this time 'Amazon Gothique' which was featured on the front cover of White Dwarf 79, it was a limited edition miniature and shared it's blister pack with 'The Warlock' from the cover of the Fighting Fantasy magazine 10.

And here is my painted version of Amazon Gothique or Chaos Amazon (LE15).

There are a couple more painted versions of this miniature here and here.

RT601 - Adventurers - Eldar Trader

Hi Folks,
I am finally getting back my Rogue Trader Adventurers, the project that this blog was originally created for and the latest miniature I have completed is the Eldar Trader from the RT601 - Adventurers range published in White Dwarf 99 back in March 1988.

Progress on my project can be seen here.

Now I don't like to gloat but this miniature cost me the tidy sum of $1 from eBay U.S, well actually $5 as there were 5 Rogue Trader Eldar in the auction lot and no one was buying so I had to rescue him as I did not have the time to strip my terribly enamel painted original from the 80's.
I did really enjoy painting this miniature, he sports the obligatory Rogue Trader mohican (which I have talked about before) and is covered in the trappings of a swashbuckling spacefarering trader, tights, codpiece, jewellery and a discrete weapon. I went for gold jewellery as I imagine him landing on savage human fringe worlds and impressing all those greedy little eyes with all things shiny while relieving them of their rare xenos artefacts.  There is quite a wide gap on his base that is reserved for a Gyrinx (page 213 RT rulebook), I was given two suitable cat miniatures by Paul over at Sho3box a long time ago (be sure to follow his superb work)  but alas they are too big for the base and still sit half finished, I recently found a little present in a trade in the shape of a realistic tiny Squirrel miniature that fits the gap perfect and I am sure painted neon blue or something would pass as a Gyrinx.  I would like to get your thoughts on the Squirrel proxy before I commit (no Ptera-Squirrel on page 215 suggestions please that's just ridiculous :D).

I think the Eldar Trader miniature really captures the Rogue Trader universe as illustrated in the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook, a good example is page 188 of the Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader rulebook which has similar character concepts that would not be out of place in the RT601 - Adventurers range.

More Adventurers on the paint station as we speak.

RT601 - Adventurers - Bandit, Tech-Priest Schlan and Psyker

Hi Folks,
I am still on my Rogue Trader Adventurers project (although I am struggling with the temptation to get back to my Chaos Beastmen and the latest miniatures I have completed is a lovely trio Bandit, Tech-Priest Schlan and Psyker from the RT601 - Adventurers range published in White Dwarf 99 back in March 1988.

First we have Bandit in my mind he is none other than George Peppard in Battle Beyond the Stars, the space cowboy in this much watch Stars Wars clone, every time it is on I watch and love this movie with my childhood eyes. I have painted this miniature several times over the years but this time I thought I would have a go at a glow effect on his Eldar Lasgun, I still haven't got the technique down yet but I'll keep trying.

Second up we have Tech-Priest Schlan of the Adeptus Mechanicus who sports a staff adorned with a imperial wing symbol from way before the current cog and skull emblem, I didn't really enjoy painting this miniature as there was lots of swallow details which even the thinnest of paint seem to obscure.

Lastly we have Psyker, another rare Rogue Trader female sculpt in a great dynamic pose, she wouldn't be out of place in Inquisitor Eisenhorn's retinue, banishing Daemonhosts or maybe as a Pariah.

Two more Adventurers on the paint station, stay tuned.

RT601 - Scum

Hi Folks, here is my my latest painted miniature the aptly named 'Scum' or more fondly know as Space Eunuch due to inscription on his base tag, now what the hell is a Space Eunuch?

So here is the dictionary definition of a Eunuch for those who do not know: "a man who has been castrated, especially (in the past) one employed to guard the women's living areas at an oriental court", you know big bald headed guy's with a single earring, baggy trousers, guarding the harem in many a Arabian Knights tale.

Now I was thinking a Space Marine is the perfect eunuch as they are about as sexless as you can get and this miniature would fit the bill for the adventuring penitent Marine from the Ian Watson novel. He would also make a nice boarding party member and looks like he would be first on to any captured Spaceship, a pit fighter, body guard, the list is endless.

This was a nice miniature to paint as he has an interesting armour harness and Chainsword, I distressed these a little but tried not to go overboard as this would blur the details.

He also had a bit of a badly sculpted fist where the palm poked out like a massive ball which I didn't discover until I was painting him so I didn't have a chance to file it down so I managed paint it as a Grenade.

I am going to name space Eunuch after a real historical Eunuch would rose to be one of the most powerful men in Europe at the time, Narses. (Read up if you don't know his story)

An end is in sight for my Rogue Trader Adventurers project, 8 more miniatures to paint.
